Four more rounds and then it will be Moto2. Adrian Huertas has in fact decided to follow a new project in 2025, saying goodbye to the paddock of the production-based series. In fact, waiting for him will be the MotoGP paddock, with the middle category that will see him riding the Italtrans Kalex.
First, however, there is to go out with a bang from World Superport as he aims to reach the goal of the world title. Of this and much more we just talked about it with the Spanish talent in an interview conducted during the Magny-Cours weekend.
"As you all know next year I will race in Moto2 - he said - I am happy because it is a great opportunity and I can't wait to start. Obviously the priority is to try to win the title in Supersport to crown a fantastic path in this paddock with the Ducati V2 and Aruba."
Adrian, there has been a lot of talk about you in this rider transfer market. Your move to SBK seemed to be a done deal, instead....
"It's true, I can confirm that. At one point in the season there was a major opportunity for me in Superbike. Not only that, I also had other offers on the table, and I can say that honestly and truthfully. The fact is that time was needed and I didn't feel like waiting any longer. Then came the call from Italtrans, which made me an offer I just couldn't pass up, so I took the chance."
I guess your goal was Bautista's Panigale?
"Of course I wanted Alvaro's bike, because that team is the factory team and we can all see what they are doing. However, Bautista decided to continue and I decided to accept a new challenge represented by Moto2."
Why Moto2? In a context that is new in some ways?
"Because my dream has always been to race in MotoGP and I think Moto2 is the best way to get there."
You mentioned MotoGP: who are the greats you've been inspired by?
"I have always had Pedrosa as a benchmark and also Vinales. I like their riding style especially Dani's. Of him I particularly admire the person he is, his human side, in fact since I was a child I was cheering for him and I was inspired by his being a rider."
Many people say that your path should set an example for young riders. Is that true?
"I come from a humble family and I don't have a briefcase. If I had money I would have gone to Moto3 after the Rookies Cup. However, I am proud to have gotten where I am just by hard work and all the efforts I have put in over the years. I think I have worked hard without giving up, and I think I have that potential that is needed."
Is it true that you are great friends with Acosta?
"Pedro was one of my biggest rivals, if not the first, and he is one of my best friends. I have a great relationship with him, which has lasted a long time. But in addition to him I also know Holgado and Guevara well because we used to train with them from a young age on motorcycles. I also know Aldeguer and I think I have the same talent as them, given what they have done in the past. I would like to find them again in MotoGP and that is why I am going to Moto2."
What about Pedro: are you surprised by his potential in MotoGP? Did you talk to each other after last week's announcement?
"I was convinced that Pedro would get where he is now. He worked much harder than the others at a key time in his career, which was when we were small. He was one of those who trained every day during the week while we only trained on weekends. I talk to him often, there is a really good relationship, and I would like to keep the promise of getting together again in MotoGP. He is already there, while I will have to sweat a little (smiles)."
Adrian, you are someone who has never been afraid to get your hands dirty and put miles on the clock....
"I live in Madrid and unfortunately there are no places to train with the bike. Therefore I take the van, which is almost my second home, I do 6 hours on the road with music to go to Murcia or Valencia to train. I'm not afraid of all that, in the end this sport requires commitment and sacrifice, and that's okay."
What should we expect from you in Moto2?
"I honestly don't know. However, I'm a hard worker and I know I'll have to sweat to be competitive, but I'm certainly not afraid of the effort."
Can you win the title in SSP?
"We'll try, it won't be easy, but I'll try to the last."
