On June 15th, during the inaugural round of the World WCR at the circuit dedicated to Marco Simoncelli, Mia Rusthen took a bad fall at the fifth lap in Saturday's race. She was quickly transported to the Bufalini Hospital in Cesena, due to a concussion caused by a head injury, and placed in a drug-induced coma, followed by surgery to stop a hemorrhage.
It's been a slow and complicated road to recovery and rehab that has, however, led her to become mobile again, as her family communicated via Instagram, along with a video in which she's walking, although assisted.
"Here's Mia, 12 weeks after the Misano accident, at her long-awaited discharge from the Sunnaas hospital. Look how she's walking on her own with only the assistance of her sister," the long post reads. "Things are progressing in every way for her. Step by step, day by day, she's improving. She's a true champion, working hard, going from laughter, to tears, to despair, never wanting to give up, even though that would be the temptation, sometimes."
"She's back as smart, strong, sweet, sensitive, stubborn, funny, and wonderful as she has always been. The road is still long and complicated, and it's going be up to her to fight, but we'll all support her, and we know you will too." The message ended in a dedication to the fans the 21-year-old's family members wanted to give credit to.
