The best of the Aprilias at the finish line in the Misano Sprint was Maverick Vinales', in 11th position, just one better than Aleix Espargarò. No Noale bike got points. That's a sign of a crisis which seems to be lasting for a few GPs.
Epsargarò blamed it on his qualifying session, in which he didn't go further than 13th: "I found a yellow flag and then lost my passage to the Q2 by a tenth. Starting back in the grid makes everything more difficult for the race. My pace wasn't bad. I had a couple of pretty strong laps. But, when I caught up to the group ahead of me, I couldn't get past. You can't do much about that here."
All fair, but not enough to explain the RS-GP's difficulties.
"The first four Ducatis are flying. It's hard to understand where we lost our competitiveness," Aleix admitted. "It's something extraordinary Getting more than tes is extraordinary."
The risk is that it may become the norm, notwithstanding the difficulties you have in Misano when you're in the belly of the pack.
"It's very difficult to overtake and, when you're in the group, it's a nightmare," the Spanish rider stressed. "It was my fault for falling yesterday and making a mistake in qualifying. Today we suffered a lot because of the heat- It's one of the biggest problems we have. I reached my physical limit at the end of the race, and it's strange because the temperatures were not that high. The new fairing seems to be even worse than the old one in terms of heat. I'm also worried about the upcoming GPs."
The fact that Aprilia doesn't cool ... its hot spirits is nothing new.
"The heat is unbelievable. It doesn't just get to me, but to all the components of the bike. It increases the temperature of the tires, the temperature of the brakes, the temperature of the suspension oil. It's something we have to improve," he said, expressing his next goal.
Along with trying to mend the gap that has formed from the Ducatis.
"I'm really disappointed. We're not slow, but the Ducatis are making a difference. We're not far from the KTMs, but we aren't at the level of the Ducatis. Maybe the engineers can help us finish the season on the upswing in the tests on Monday," Aleix said, hopefully.
Off-plans also occurred today, like when Orradre's Moto2 entered Espargarò's garage during practice.
"It crashed into the table where my engineers are. Fortunately, they had gone out for coffee, and only a few mechanics got scared. Really strange things can happen in this world," the Spanish rider commented, smiling about the narrow escape.
