On the day of Marc Marquez's triumph in the Aragon Sprint, his brother Alex finished fourth, just missing out on the podium. It was still a positive race for the Spaniard, who confirmed the steps forward made on the Ducati GP23 of the Gresini team.
Alex's goal was to latch onto the Top 3, but unfortunately mistakes in the early laps cost him dearly, and he could do nothing else but console himself.
"I couldn't push as hard today because of the poor grip," he began, "in the race we needed to be precise and focused. Then at the start there was that maneuver by Pecco, who was on the dirt, but in the end these are things that can happen and are part of the races."
Was the goal the podium?
"It would have been possible. The fact is that I made a big mistake in Turn 7. Pecco passed me because I was off the line and lost too much time. Right at that moment I think I lost what could have been a potential podium. However, there is Sunday, where we have a long race ahead of us."
Today your brother Marc finally returned to victory.
"Fortunately I won before him a Sprint with Ducati (he smiles). Of course I'm just joking even though Marc told me, 'I won a race after 1,000 days.' And I told him, 'No, you won a Sprint, stay calm, because the race that matters is tomorrow.' Joking aside tomorrow's will be a very important race where he has a great chance."
How much does the low grip affect the performance of the bikes?
"The grip is low and as a result we cannot extract the maximum potential from the Ducati, in fact the potential of the bikes seems similar. A lot, however, depends on the style, and I think Marc has something more and is much stronger in some places than others. The fact is that he is riding naturally and it is also difficult to explain how he is so effective."
On the tire front, however, what is the situation?
"The medium is quite hard and wears out a lot on the left side. We'll see what happens tomorrow although handling will be crucial. The fact is that we lose a lot of traction and that affects it not a little. Certainly the Sprint was important to get more information for Sunday."
