Enea Bastianini finished at the foot of the podium in the Red Bull Ring Sprint. A fourth place in comeback for the rider from Romagna, dominating in the Silverstone round. But, thanks to a mistake at the start, the Ducati rider was forced to recover after losing several positions.
Nonetheless, Enea was still brilliant and determined, to the extent that he was able to climb back up. So, he can continue to consider the glass half full.
"Without that long race, it would've been different," he admitted. "I got a little too caught up in the eagerness of wanting to make a comeback, and I made that mistake, and then paid for it. All in all, we're still there in a weekend where we suffered a lot. It's more or less like Barcelona, where we make adjustments, but it doesn't change the situation that much. However, we managed to get back on track ahead of tomorrow's race, which will be different and harder."
There's a risk of rain for tomorrow ...
"There could be this variable. We've almost never raced this year with water. It would be something new, but it doesn't matter to me because we'll have to be competitive in both conditions. I hope for dry weather because we need to do more laps to better understand some aspects."
How come you can't be as effective as you were at Silverstone?
"It's a combination of things. The asphalt is different, as well as the way the tires work. Braking is my Achilles heel. In fact, I can't get a good braking point. I can do something to get closer, considering I've been strong in the past. I hope I'll find something to fight for tomorrow morning with those up in front."
How useful is it to look at Pecco and Martin's data?
"Sometimes it also makes you lose your way, because I'm looking at two riders with completely different styles than mine. I suffer a lot with the front, because I exert so much effort in mid-corner. In fact, I'm the one with the Ducati who has the most speed in entry. With the hard on the left turns, it was very hard. Mounting it for the race bothers me."
What race do you expect for Sunday?
"It all depends on the start because, if I'm behind, the tire wears out quickly and even slides down the straight. I hope I won't be in the same situation as 2023."
What do you need to work on for tomorrow?
"The foundation is pretty good. I just have to figure out how to take off those two tenths per lap, considering that I only did good laps today. Until this morning, I was making a lot of mistakes without creating a foundation for the race."
How much did the yellow flag weigh on qualifying?
"I always screwed up the T3, while I was confident on that lap. It was too bad about the yellow flag, because I would've finished fifth or sixth."
