Fifteenth in Free Practice 2 and ninth in the afternoon session, Marco Bezzecchi ended his first day at the Red Bull Ring quite satisfied, even if a good amount of critical issues exist. He was involved in two falls but still managed to get something positive out of this double setback.
"The goal was to get into the Q2, and we did it," he confided, with satisfaction. "It was a good Friday, in which we managed to try all the front tires available. Too bad about the two falls, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. But, in both cases, I figured out what I had done wrong so, all in all, it went well. We're not quite there yet,, but the start was decent."
Commenting on the many mistakes made by the riders in this first part of the weekend, the native from Rimini said: "This is a track that leads you to progressively break away harder until turn four, and making mistakes can happen. In free practice 1, I ventured too fast under braking with the soft on the front. Even if it provides good grip, it lacks support. In the afternoon, I broke away earlier by opening the throttle immediately, but it's not the best thing to do with the hard. Does the front end lock frequently here ? On our bike, in particular, it's a constant problem. On one hand it helps to find the limit, on the other, it's annoying."
Speaking about to the pitfalls he's going to face on Saturday, the VR46 Racing rider emphasized how qualifying will be crucial, but the Q2 even more so: "For tomorrow, I'm aiming for the second row but, to do that, I'll have to be good, otherwise, I'll still have to do the best I can. Compared to the beginning of the season, have I improved? Effectively, from finishing between thirteenth and seventeenth, I'm now fighting between sixth and twelfth, which means that a little we've made a bit of progress, all to the benefit of the morale of the team and me being on the bike. Overall, we're working well and responding properly to difficulties," he concluded, satisfied.
