He was convinced he could come home with something more from the Silverstone weekend but, instead, after finishing 16th in Saturday's Sprint Race, Joan Mir was forced to return to the pits ahead of time due to an engine failure. The engine continues to be the real problem for Honda, which lacks power and trudges in the back of the pack.
In England, the only rider to be provided with the new specification was Takaaki Nakagami, while the Spanish rider will have to wait for Austria to have it.
Analyzing his race, the 2020 MotoGP world champion explained what didn't work on his RC213V. "The lights on the instrument panel lit up and, on the straight, when Morbidelli overtook me, I lost power. It was probably an electrical problem, because there was no oil left in the bike. But I have to say that the feeling up to that point had been the best of the weekend. I felt like I was back to being quite competitive," he stated, as reported by the Crashnet website.
Speaking of the critical issues related to the engine, the 26-year-old confided, "We lose performance with the current one, and even Taka struggled a lot here. In my opinion, the best one is the standard one that Zarco is using. But, when you try so many specifications, you end up losing something in terms of set-up."
The former Suzuki rider then came to a conclusion: "Probably, by touching the bike as little as possible, you get better results. We changed the geometry and other elements a hundred times, but this didn't give us more grip nor a step forward in acceleration. So, it's preferable to feel comfortable with the front and try to have a good pace. In this sense, I got good feedback, going back to the set-up from the beginning of the championship, so I'll probably keep it as a base."
When asked if he enjoys testing the Mallorcan said, "It's not great, but that's the situation. Better to try a new one than still have this one."
