Fabio Di Giannantonio was the victim of a high-speed crash at Turn 1 today at the end of FP2 at the Sachsenring. The images that saw him holding his arm did not bode well. Fortunately, however, the VR46 rider did not pick up any fracture, and quickly climbed back onto his GP23 and was able to react by gaining access to Q2 with the 9th quickest time. A result that can only leave a smile on the face of the Roman rider, now also at the center of the rider market rumors that see him torn between reconfirmation in the VR46 team and the temptation of the Yamaha option in the Pramac team. This was then compounded by declarations from Fabio Quartararo himself, who said he would like Di Giannantonio in the project. A difficult choice then, which will presumably be unveiled during the summer break.
"I have been better - Fabio Di Giannantonio began - I have pain in my right collarbone but I am fine. On arriving in turn 1 I braked harder than in the previous laps, and as soon as I started to lean the bike the front locked up and I couldn't save it. In my opinion the hard braking combined with the cold tire is the cause."
Despite the bad crash, you are in Q2.
"I'm happy especially because after the crashes in some parts of the track I kept some margin to avoid another crash. Despite that we were very fast which is great for morale. On the tires I have a very good pace and I also think I can improve, not just the bike. On such a day in the end it's all very positive."
A great reaction after such a crash.
"We are the reaction guys! - jokes Fabio - it's us, every time we have to react. I've always thought it's important to give 100% when you get on the track and despite maybe an injury to be able to get the maximum, which today was Q2. We did a great job with the team."
The track conditions created quite a few problems for the riders today.
"The situation here is critical, it's very windy and when it's cold it's really cold. There are times when the wind picks up and you lean to the right you pray, really. But it's like that for everyone so you have to be good at managing it, especially with the right side of the tire which is difficult to get up to temperature with only three corners in the whole track."
Marco Bezzecchi has difficulty managing the rear.
"It's a 'negative' characteristic that we have with the GP23 this year. We were at the physio together, and what is helping me is that I use my physique a lot to turn the bike, but I don't know if in his case that can affect it or not."
Bezzecchi: "the most difficult day so far, but we'll figure it out."
Instead, we found a disgruntled, but optimistic, Marco Bezzecchi, who on the German circuit, in addition to the usual difficulties in managing the GP23, also had to deal with challenging conditions, even picking up a crash.
"I'm fine - reassured Bezzecchi after the crash - although I hurt my nose because some stones got into my helmet. I also have a bit of pain in my right arm but nothing serious. Let's say it was not an easy day, maybe the hardest so far. Too bad, because the feeling this morning was good, but in the afternoon we didn't improve unlike the others. So I am always there chasing, the situation is what we know."
The track conditions in this do not help, but Marco made no excuses.
"In the end it's like that for everyone, it wasn't easy and it's clear it wasn't easy for everyone. The others simply did better."
So the obstacle remains the management of the rear.
"Unfortunately I always have the same problem. With these tires the rear pushes on the front and I have trouble both cornering the bike and braking because I go wide with the lines, I practically stop in the middle of the corners, it's been happening since the beginning of the year. Here, however, is a track where you have to join everything and these difficulties are amplified. But I'm positive, we'll figure it out, we mustn't give up."
