Di Giannantonio complicated his life in Assen. Yesterday he had been left out of Q2, but this morning he managed to get in and then place on the second row. At the start of the Sprint, however, he thwarted all his efforts by making a wrong start. At that point he rolled up his sleeves, climbing back up from 11th to 5th place. Fabio had a roller coaster ride, but came out with a smile.
"I'm very happy with the race today because it was one of the most fun races since I've been racing in MotoGP," he recounted, "I got off to a bad start because the clutch lever got stuck to my glove, I couldn't get it to slide right and I got a little stuck. That was the mistake. I was going strong, though, and I did a lot of overtaking, even a double in Turn 5. It was so cool!"
The VR46 rider is satisfied with the result, also because he knows that from a technical point of view he lacks something compared to the best in the category.
"It was my best Sprint of the year, but something is still missing to make the big result with what we have. With the GP23 we are all on the limit and we are doing the best we can," he stressed, " The GP24 has something more, I can see it in the data. Those who use it do things that we can do too, especially over race distance, but being really so much on the limit, it's like flipping a coin. The goal is to stay very close to them and take advantage of any opportunity."
Fabio then went into more detail, "the 2024 bike runs much better when you release the brakes, that's the biggest difference and it does so much when you have to go fast. We say in the pits that our bike 'pushes' and that makes things a little more difficult."
Brightening things up is the fact that Di Giannantonio is at the center of the market right now. VR46 would like to keep him, but Yamaha has made him an offer. Like two suitors vying for him.
"That's good! We'll have to manage the two girlfriends ," he joked, "Right now I'm focused on doing well because this year I have a great opportunity to succeed, there's my manager working for me and I think everything will line up in the next few weeks."
Fabio's life has totally changed when you consider that last year, until November, he was in danger of having to leave MotoGP.
"Nothing in particular has clicked, simply sometimes in life there are better moments and worse ones that maybe don't even depend on you. This taught me that you should never give up, but believe in yourself. When you work so hard for something then that comes, and that's what is happening," he concluded.
