Jack Doohan, towards Formula 1 debut with Alpine

The son of the great Mick will take part in the first practice session in Canada and could be replacing Ocon in 2025. As a young boy he said, "I chose cars so, if I achieve something, no one will say it's because of my father."

Auto - News: Jack Doohan, towards Formula 1 debut with Alpine

His entrance into the premier class of car racing could have opened last Monday for him when Alpine announced its separation from Esteban Ocon at the end of the 2024 season. Surprisingly, the very nationalistic union of a French team based in England, specifically in Enstone, which fielded two transalpine drivers, has broken up, probably due to the results that have been below expectations, leading the former Renault to battle for low ranking positions. As is always the case, although it's a brutal concept, mors tua, vita mea. But Jack Doohan - son of the five-time world champion in the 500 MotoGP class, Mick - could be the one benefiting from this marriage gone wrong.

Since childhood, he's shown an interest in cars rather than the two-wheelers that were so dear to his dad. So, after moving from Australia to the French Riviera, he became a regular on the tracks, first in Italy, and this Friday, in Canada, he'll be taking part in Free Practice 1, with the very team that has included him in its junior program and may promote him next year. Third in the F2 in 2023 behind Pourchaire and Vesti, he had already put himself on the map in 2021, thanks to the F3 runner-up title behind Hauger.

One day, talking about the moment when he had informed his father that he wanted to embark on another kind of adventure than his own, Doohan recalled, "He simply told me to do what I wanted and have fun. I chose cars because I like them, but also to keep myself safe from the pressure I would've inevitably have had on my shoulders. If I advance, no one will be able to say it's because of my dad or make comparisons with him. Like everyone else, my dream is to make it to the F1." Who knows, that wish may now become a reality.
