MotoGP, KTM: "No negotiation with Marc Márquez"

At Mugello on Saturday, the Pierer Mobility AG group, along with the KTM, GASGAS, and Husqvarna Motorcycles brands, made a notable public move, confirming Pedro Acosta's transfer. The rookie prodigy who's currently 5th in the championship will be going to the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team for the next two years, where he'll join Brad Binder.

Exclusively for GPone.com, Hubert Trunkenpolz (n.b. the "T" in his last name is part of the KTM brand - Kronreif & Trunkenpolz, Mattighofen), Vice-Chairman of the Pierer Mobility Board of Directors, and Pit Beirer, Motorsport Director of the Austrian group, answered some important questions.

The two managers are excited about Pedro Acosta signing with them, since he's considered a key pawn in the riders market, and  many see him as the "new Marc Márquez." World champion in 2021 in the Moto3 and last year in the Moto2, they hope the Spanish rider will soon become the first MotoGP world champion riding a KTM. As a result, Europe's largest motorcycle manufacturer wasn't worrying about the Marc Márquez issue.

IHowever, it's becoming increasingly clear that Jack Miller's and Augusto Fernandez's positions are at risk. In turn, Enea Bastianini will most likely take a seat on the Tech3 team from 2025. His future teammate will also be required to have at least one podium finish in the 2024 season. So far, only Marco Bezzecchi - who had also ridden his first season in the Moto2 in 2019 on a KTM Red Bull Tech3 - has achieved such a result. But "Bez" is set to remain with Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing.

So, with Brad Binder long since confirmed for 2025 and 2026, and who'll then be joined by Acosta, KTM will have a very strong pair of riders for the future.

Trunkenpolz: "The contract renewal with Pedro Acosta has been our top priority in recent times. There has been no negotiation with Marc Márquez before 2025. We have never talked in a concrete way with him, because we have always given priority to Acosta. We have done everything possible to secure Acosta for 2025 and 2026. For the period after that, there are various options on how to continue with him."

Beirer: "How it is going to go forward, we do not want to specify now. We have a long-term agreement. The deadline will not be made public now. He will certainly stay with us for the next two years."

So we won't be seeing Marc Márquez on a Pierer Mobility group motorcycle in 2025 either?

Trunkenpolz: "No, definitely not. Stefan Pierer, Pit, and I all agree that Marc is not an option for us. We want to give Acosta the space and the opportunity to become an absolute superstar with us. This would not be possible if he had Marc Márquez in the garage next door in GASGAS-Tech3. We do not need all this attention. Acosta is also pursuing the goal of becoming MotoGP world champion as long as Márquez is still in the race. We will actively support him in achieving this goal."

There are still two spots available in the GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3 team, partly because the futures of Jack Miller and Augusto Fernández are uncertain after their disappointing results. There are more promising candidates, for example Enea Bastianini, with whom it seems practically decided.

Trunkenpolz: "Basically, we want to form the Tech3 team with two riders who have achieved at least one podium in 2024. The two 'work heroes' we currently have under contract can continue to strive for a while longer to achieve this. If not, there are other options and riders we are talking to."

Ducati currently occupies the top four places in the World Championship with Martin, Bagnaia, Marc Márquez, and Bastianini. They lost Jorge Martin, who's going to Aprilia. And Bastianini must fear that Marc Márquez will take his place from Lenovo. Yet, in 2022, he had four wins and a third place in the World Championship with Gresini's Ducati.

Trunkenpolz: "Bastianini is definitely an interesting option for us. We don't deny that at all."

Beirer: "The media, however, should leave us at least three days to enjoy the fact that Pedro Acosta, the new MotoGP super talent, chose us, since he probably could have chosen any vehicle in the paddock. It is a great joy for us to see Pedro's commitment, as well as his family's and his management's. Now that we have finalized the agreement with Brad Binder and Pedro Acosta for the next two years, we already have with us the two winning riders we needed. We are convinced of that."

Trunkenpolz: "Pedro signed a new contract with us because he was absolutely convinced. We were his first choice. He did not stay with us because we had an option on him, but he himself said that it was the perfect solution for him."

KTM: "Haben nie mit Marc Márquez verhandelt"

Die Pierer Mobility AG mit den Marken KTM, GASGAS und Husqvarna Motorcycles verkündete am Samstag beim Mugello-GP einen erstaunlichen Coup: Der sensationelle MotoGP-Rookie und aktuelle WM-Fünfte Pedro Acosta (20) wurde für die nächsten zwei Jahre für das Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team verpflichtet - als Teamkollege von Brad Binder.

Im Exklusiv-Interview mit GPOne.com beantworten Hubert Trunkenpolz, Stellvertretender Vorstandsvorsitzender der Pierer Mobility AG (das T als Anfangsbuchstabe in seinem Familiennamen bildet die Marke KTM, die für Kronreif & Trunkenpolz, Mattighofen steht, und Motorsport-Direktor Pit Beirer ein paar wichtige MotoGP-Fragen, die zahlreiche Fans und Medien beschäftigen.

Die beiden KTM-Manager sind froh über die Verpflichtung von Pedro Acosta, der als heisse Aktie auf dem Transfermarkt galt und als der "neue Marc Márquez" betrachtet wird. Der überragende Moto3-Weltmeister von 2021 und Moto2-Weltmeister von 2023 soll demnächst der erste MotoGP-Weltmeister auf KTM werden. Deshalb war Marc Márquez für den größten Motorradhersteller Europas kein Thema.

Aber es zeichnet sich ab: Die KTM-Plätze von Jack Miller und Augusto Fernández wackeln. Dafür Bastianini wird 2023 aller Voraussicht nach einen Platz bei GASGAS Tech3 übernehmen. Auch vom zweiten GASGAS-Fahrer wird ein Podestplatz 2024 verlangt. So einen Erfolg hat bisher nur Marco Bezzecchi vorzuweisen, der seine erste Moto2-Saison 2019 auf einer Red Bull Tech3-KTM absolviert hat. Aber "Bez" ist weiter bei Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing vorgesehen.

?Brad Binder war für 2025 und 2026 bei Red Bull KTM längst gesetzt. Mit Acosta wird er künftig ein sehr schlagkräftiges Fahrerduo bilden.

Trunkenpolz: Die Vertragsverlängerung mit Pedro Acosta hatte für uns in letzter Zeit oberste Priorität.

Mit Marc Márquez haben wir für 2025 nie verhandelt. Es hat mit ihm nie ein ernsthaftes Gespräch gegeben, denn wir haben immer die Priorität auf Acosta gelegt. Wir haben alles darangesetzt, Acosta für 2025 und 2026 bei uns zu fixieren. Für die Zeit danach existieren verschiedene Varianten, wie wir mit ihn weitermachen.

Beirer: Wie es danach weitergeht, das wollen wir jetzt noch nicht genau verlautbaren. Wir haben danach eine längerfristige Vereinbarung, deren Enddatum wird jetzt nicht bekannt geben. Zwei Jahre ist er einmal sicher bei uns.

?Marc Márquez wird also auch 2025 auf keinem Motorrad der Pierer Mobility AG sitzen?
Trunkenpolz: Nein, sicher nicht. Stefan Pierer, Pit und ich, wir sind uns einig, dass Marc für uns keine Option ist.
Wir wollen Acosta den Raum und die Möglichkeit geben, sich bei uns zum absoluten Superstar zu entwickeln. Das wird nicht gut möglich sein, wenn er Marc Márquez nebenan in der GASGAS-Tech3-Box stehen hat. Diesen Wirbel brauchen wir nicht.
Außerdem hat Acosta das Ziel, MotoGP-Weltmeister zu werden, solange Márquez noch fährt. Bei diesem Ziel werden wir ihn tatkräftig unterstützen.

?Im GASGAS Factory Tech3-Team sind jetzt noch zwei Plätze frei. Die Zukunft von Jack Miller und Augusto Fernández ist nach den enttäuschenden Ergebnissen ungewiss. Es gibt für GASGAS vielversprechendere Kandidaten, zum Beispiel Enea Bastianini, der so gut wie fix ist, wie man hört.
Trunkenpolz: Es ist grundsätzlich so, dass wir das Tech3-Team mit zwei Fahrern besetzen wollen, die 2024 mindestens einen Podestplatz errungen haben.
Die zwei Helden der Arbeit, die wir jetzt unter Vertrag haben, können sich jetzt noch eine Zeitlang bemühen, so ein Ergebnis sicherzustellen.
Sonst gibt es andere Varianten und Fahrer, mit denen wir jetzt im Gespräch sind.
?Ducati hat in der WM 2024 mit Martin, Bagnaia, Marc Márquez und Bastianini die ersten vier WM-Ränge beschlagnahmt. Jorge Martin haben sie an Aprilia verloren. Und Bastianini muss fürchten, dass ihm Marc Márquez den Platz bei Lenovo wegnimmt. Dabei hat er 2022 auf der Gresini-Ducati vier MotoGP-Siege und den dritten WM-Rang erobert.

Trunkenpolz: Bastianini ist für uns sicher eine interessante Option. Das streiten wir überhaupt nicht ab.
Beirer: Aber die Medien sollen uns jetzt mal drei Tage lang die Freude darüber geniessen lassen, dass sich mit Pedro Acosta das neue Mega-Talent am MotoGP-Himmel für uns entschieden hat. Denn er hätte sich wahrscheinlich jedes Fahrzeug im Fahrerlager aussuchen können.
Es war eine große Freude für uns, sein Commitment und das seiner Familie sowie seines Managements zu spüren.
Da wir uns mit Brad Binder und Pedro Acosta jetzt für die nächsten zwei Jahre einig sind, haben wir die Matchwinner, die wir brauchen, bereits an Bord. Davon sind wir überzeugt.

Trunkenpolz: Pedro hat in voller Überzeugung bei uns einen neuen Vertrag unterschrieben. Wir waren absolut erste Wahl für ihn. Er blieb nicht bei uns, weil wir eine Option auf ihn hatten, sondern er hat gesagt, es passt bei uns für ihn perfekt.
