Barbier: why Pirelli chose to enter Moto3 and Moto2

INTERVIEW – “Superbike has been our springboard and in the World Championship we will offer more choice without a rider feeling sacrificed. Ours will be standard tyres and the Moto3 SC1 can already be purchased from dealers. It's still early for MotoGP, first test in November"

News: Barbier: why Pirelli chose to enter Moto3 and Moto2

A new challenge awaits Pirelli in 2024. After a good 20 years of experience gained in the production-derived racing series paddock, from next season the Italian manufacturer will now be found in the MotoGP world championship offering its support to Moto 2 and Moto3.

The decisive meeting took place at the Mugello round, while yesterday the announcement of the agreement for next season came. We caught up with Giorgio Barbier, Pirelli's track racing manager.

“We are very proud to announce this new adventure for 2024 – commented Barbier – regarding how the agreement with Dorna was born, I cannot reveal too much detail, because this is confidential information in compliance with the Organizer and the current supplier".

Of course, I understand. Why did Dorna choose Pirelli?

“I think our strong point was the work we have been doing for 20 years in the Superbike paddock. That was undoubtedly the springboard, given the knowledge acquired on racing circuits around the world and at the same time the quality of our product. I think Dorna and IRTA have carefully evaluated our efforts and in the end here we are in the World Championship".

What will Pirelli bring new compared to Dunlop?

“For us, 2024 will be an important testing ground where we will get to know the bikes and the riders as well as all the dynamics of the Championship. Having said that, there will be some key aspects that Pirelli will focus on. First, we would like to give riders and teams greater freedom of choice during the race weekend. In this way a rider will not feel sacrificed in choosing a few and limited options, but he will have greater freedom to move. In addition to this, we aim to offer a type of stable and quality material with attention to the search for performance in any type of condition. This is Pirelli's challenge in the World Championship to be taken one step at a time".

Have you scheduled a test yet?

"Yes, we are evaluating how to proceed, and we will do a first test on the track in November to collect the first data and be ready for the start of the World Championship in 2024".

In these years you have also worked in SSP300 and SSP. Will there be any solution close to these Championships?

“The Moto3 tyre is smaller than that of the 300 while that of the Moto2 is larger than the SSP. We will therefore have to start production even if all our tyres will be standard tyres available to all our customers. Just to give an example, the Moto 3 SC1 is already on sale and can be purchased at our dealers".

You are starting with Moto3 and Moto2, then in 2027 you will close the circle with MotoGP, right?

“In 2027 I will already be retired so someone else will take care of that contract (he smiles). MotoGP certainly represents excellence, but we don't even know what kind of bike we will have in four years since everyone is waiting for the change in regulations. I think it's too early to talk about MotoGP now, even if this represents another exciting challenge. For the moment, we are only thinking of Moto2 and Moto3, since we are very happy with this adventure which will help Pirelli explore new markets in America and Asia where SBK may not be present".

Some people are saying that Pirelli has chosen the World Championship because the renewal with Formula 1 is at risk.

“I think they are two completely different worlds and there is no comparison at all. The World Championship is certainly not a stopgap, and I can guarantee this without too many problems. Indeed, it is a great challenge where Pirelli wants to further raise its level by offering quality and a product accessible to all".
