MotoGP, Albesiano: "the wings are progress, now you don't fly on the straight at Mugello"

INTERVIEW - "This MotoGP is a balance between show and technological development even if as an engineer you always want to make a spaceship; I'm attracted to an ever-faster bike, for me wings are progress: before you did the Mugello straight with the bike jumping, now it’s glued to the ground"

He is undoubtedly the mastermind behind this Aprilia. Who are we talking about? Romano Albesiano of course, one of the most highly anticipated figures at the Aprilia All Stars in Misano. Lots of applause for the engineer from Cuneo, who in recent years has shown made strides forward with the RS-GP, to such an extent that the Noale-based company has returned to the winners’ podium.

Romano tells us about his dreams and ambitions in this interview which ranges between past and present.

"This an event that is getting better all the time and only by participating do you understand its real worth - began Albesiano - this year it has made a commitment dedicated to Romagna, a fantastic region, which is going through a complicated moment, and is one to which we are strongly close".

Romano, Aprilia's past and present are on display here. You once said: the 250 is the essence of the bike.

“The concept of essentiality in motorbikes is worth a lot, even though now there is a dose of complexity, the current one of the MotoGP bikes is certainly very high. In the early ‘90s I remember that there was essentiality, dexterity and intuition, but now you have to add a level of analysis, complexity and study of each phenomenon. From an engineering point of view it is certainly suggestive, for enthusiasts I don't know (smiles)"

We need to take a step back?

“This MotoGP is a balance between show and technological development. Often we talk about a return to simplification, even though as an engineer you always want to make a spaceship (smiles)”.

Rivola spoke of the need to revise the regulations.

“The challenge of man against machine is increasingly demanding. I see a lot of riders with forearm problems. Perhaps this is a stimulus so that maybe we can meet half-way. I'm attracted by an increasingly faster bike, given that once you did the Mugello straight and the bikes jumped, while today they do it inside the fairing with the bike glued to the ground. But I have a question."

Which one?

“Is aerodynamics a risk or progress? For me, it's progress, despite the fact that the bikes don’t overtake anymore."

Is it fair to say that Aprilia has picked up less than it deserved in this 2023?

“Maybe we would have won the last one. There was a dose of bad luck, plus a few small mistakes. In this MotoGP you have to be perfect from Friday to Sunday. Maybe we have some limit at the starts and need to sort this out as soon as possible. We will soon see the real worth of the bike”.
