Recently, one of the hottest topics in the paddock is related to the FIM Stewards, led by Freddie Spencer, who are often in the eye of the storm because of the decisions they reach that many don’t agree with. So much so that the riders wanted to meet with them at the Safety Commission in Le Mans. But it’s not only the riders who complain about the lack of uniformity in judgment, because team managers aren’t happy either.

Lin Jarvis, managing director for Yamaha, told  Speedweek. “We certainly need a thorough review of how the Stewards are behaving. The fundamental factor is that the confidence of the participants in this sport, in this system, has disappeared,” he said.

More than a criticism, it’s an observation of what’s happening.

They have to restore confidence in their role and it’s not an easy task,” Jarvis continued. “No one denies that being a Steward in our sport, with high speeds and  overtakings, isn'r simple, but there must be a way to improve. There's currently no consistency in judgments. Not all cases and not all riders are treated equally. Having balance would be very important, and it’s not happening. Some accidents are punished, others aren’t, even if they’re similar. Sometimes sanctions are imposed even for very small infractions.

Yamaha knows this well. In Jerez, Quartararo was punished for what was clearly a race accident.

They say the riders have asked for severe and clear sanctions. It’s a fact, but they should be fair sanctions,” Lin remarked. “If someone misbehaves, he must be punished accordingly. No one wants to see childish penalties for normal maneuvers, like overtaking. These are ridiculous penalties that can destroy a  rider’s  entire weekend.
