MotoGP, Quartararo: "In 2022 I couldn't overtake at Jerez, hopefully I can turn it around this race"

“It was nice to get on the podium in Austin and we want to do it in other races. Nothing big to test in Monday's test, it's up to the team to find a solution. I’m happy if they postpone the tyre pressure rule."

MotoGP: Quartararo:

After a complicated start to the championship, Fabio Quartararo found the podium again on the Austin circuit, taking Yamaha to third place in the GP of the Americas. A result that gives El Diablo and the Iwata manufacturer confidence and morale ahead of the weekend at the Jerez track. A track that both the 2021 champion and his M1 like.

“We had great pace in Austin and it was nice to get on the podium. We want to do it in many other races and this could be the right occasion - commented the rider from Nice, who achieved his first victory in the top class on the circuit named after Angel Nieto - We did a lot of laps on this track, which is a circuit that I really like. I've always been fast here, even in Moto3. In Moto2 I've virtually never been fast on any circuit, but in MotoGP yes, I've been fast. It will go well, we just need to be concentrated, focused and define our target very well in qualifying".

Indicated by Alex Rins as a possible race winner, where will Fabio be able to overtake on this circuit?

"Everywhere! Everywhere I can. It’s difficult because in 2021, the corner speed we had was better compared to other manufacturers. We were better in corner speed but last year we were not - recalled the Frenchman – Last year was really similar and I was behind Pecco but the pressures went so high, I could not stay close to him and I could not overtake. I think the last corner is a great place to overtake. Last year I overtook nobody in the race. Hopefully we can turn it around for this race."

At the end of the weekend, the MotoGP riders will be back on track again for a day of testing on the Andalusian track. A Monday on which Quartararo does not seem to have particularly high hopes.

"What I’ve heard [there is] nothing big. Of the problem [we’re having] we cannot touch it for this year. We will have some items but nothing crazy - explained the 24-year-old, who is not sure of the benefit these small modifications will bring - To be honest I don’t know. I reported after all three races clearly where the problem is, where we can improve considering we cannot touch the engine. It’s up to them to find a solution and to find something in this area at tracks like Austin. There’s many things, it's not just acceleration. We cannot use the power because we having issues with wheelie for so long. We have to fix it. But if we put more wings on the straight; we are already not that fast."

Despite what had been initially decided, the new front tyre pressure monitoring rule will not be introduced at Jerez and will continue on an experimental basis at least until Mugello. The news was welcomed by Quartararo: “If they postpone it, that's fine. Every time they postpone it I am happy he admitted – You obviously try to have less and less pressure, however things will not change if they postpone it."
