MotoGP, Quartararo: "I don't understand the limit of the M1, I brake and I don't know if I'll lose it"

"We're still looking for a base setup, but Friday in Austin didn't go badly. The pace is good even if I make some mistakes, but I continue to struggle on the flying lap"

Compared to Argentina, it's a completely different story, but Quartararo hasn't seen the clear skies yet, not even at Austin. The clouds have cleared, his place in Q2 is assured, but the Frenchman knows that it's still not enough, that more is needed to fight against Bagnaia and the Ducati. And it won't be easy to find it. However, he also knows that he still has room for improvement.

“We don’t have our base yet, so we need to find it and then really try to get fully into the mode where we don't change the bike – admitted Fabio - But right now I don't feel good on the bike. So we have to find a solution where we can really improve. Sometimes last year I could really feel where the limit was exactly. And this year, no. Today I made two good saves, but I didn't really feel the tyre moving before.”

Having said that, Friday was not a disaster.

“It wasn't the best day, but it didn't go too bad either – was his opinion - Especially the pace, in the second session, was good, the times were fast even if I made some mistakes and the only lap in which I didn't make any was the one when I pitted”.

The problem is always the same.

“I felt quite OK on the pace. But still on time attack, I'm struggling so much. And I think I'm over-riding a little bit too much - he continued - So tomorrow the key will be to stay calm and try not to brake a little bit too late or make too much corner speed without thinking about the exit. Because with this bike if you make a small mistake you are in the back, so you need to be super precise. The speed today was not so great, so I don't know why. But hopefully tomorrow we can find a solution to be more on top, because today we were much more low than expected.”

On the tyres, on the other hand, he has clearer ideas.

“I don't have everything under control, but I think we're in pretty good shape. It's quite clear that the best is the soft at the rear and the hard at the front, at least in the afternoon" concluded Quartararo.
