SBK, Petrucci: “I wasted time with Rea, but we’re finally where we should be”

“I’m pleased with the work we’ve done and today’s result. Unfortunately, I lost contact with Bassani in battling it out with the Kawasakis. We’ll be really happy when we get on the podium.”

“I had never been to Mandalika before. I don’t even know where the first corner is,” Danilo Petrucci said on the eve of the Indonesian weekend. A weekend that, against all odds, is giving the rider from Terni surprising results with his fifth place at the finish line after Race 1 and a good battle with Rea’s and Lowes’ Kawasakis.

I’m pleased with the work we’ve done and with my race. Clearly, we’ll be happy when we get on the podium, because that’s our goal, but the team did a great job. They worked until last night to figure out what I needed, and everything worked today,” Petrux said. In the last part of the race, he managed to ride at the same pace as Bassani.

I was a bit too conservative at first. I was overtaken too many times, and this limited me a bit,” the Barni team rider explained. “I had a good battle with Rea, but I lost contact with Bassani. I was very afraid of tire wear, because we were having problems all weekend. But, in the race, it kept really well.

After a complicated start to the season, the 32-year-old rider can finally look forward to tomorrow, when he’ll attempt to learn a lesson from Race 1 and try to further progress with the Panigale #9.

Now I know that I can be a bit more incisive tomorrow at the beginning and be more confident, but I have to say that I’m satisfied with today’s result. We’re finally where we should be,” Danilo concluded. Who knows if he’s wondering how he might have done if he had been familiar with the track.
