MotoGP, Aleix Espargarò: “Third place? It would be crappy for the others, but a dream for me”

“Bastianini is fast, clean, and one of the best riders in the second part of the race, but we’ve got a strong pace. Valencia is too small for the MotoGP. Quartararo? Realistically, I don't think he has much of a  chance.”

MotoGP: Aleix Espargarò: “Third place? It would be crappy for the others, but a dream for me”

If all the attention will inevitably be on the fight for the MotoGP world championship title tomorrow, we’ll also witness an intense dualism between Aleix Espargarò and Enea Bastianini at the Ricardo Tormo in Valencia regarding the third step of the championship podium. Called to redeem himself from the last uneventful race, the Aprilia Racing Team rider is one point ahead of his rival in the standings, as well as on the starting grid. He’ll be starting from the 10th box, with the Ducati rider chasing from the 13th.

I’m happy because we’ve made some progress compared to yesterday, less so in the position,Espargarò said. “The second row could be within our reach, but I couldn’t get a good lap. We proved to be competitive on distance in the FP4. We’re looking forward to tomorrow’s race. Our goal? Keeping our third place in the championship. For Marquez, or some other rider, that would be crappy, but it would be a dream for me. I can’t think much about Enea, especially in the first part where I have to be fast.

Do you feel you’re at an advantage with respect to Bastianini?
We’re both not spectacular here. I’m confident because the bike has improved considerably, but Enea is fast, clean, and one of the best riders in the second part of the race. Something I’ve tried to work on these days.”

And then there’s the Constructor’s standings.
Maverick and I are great riders. We’ll see if we can take everything home.

Did you expect so many falls?
This is Valencia. The track is too small for the MotoGP. You’re always leaning. And losing even just one tenth can compromise your result.”

Could Quartararo succeed in his venture?
He’s doing really well this weekend, but there are a lot of Ducatis around him. He has to hope for a miracle and win. Realistically, I don’t think he has much of a chance.
