After 3rd place at Phillip Island and Quartararo’s crash, Pecco Bagnaia is now at leading the MotoGP world championship, 14 points ahead of Fabio, 27 over Aleix Espargarò and 42 over Enea Bastianini (the last rider still mathematically in the fight for the title).

This means that Bagnaia could win the World Championship already in Malaysia, the same track where he became world champion in Moto2 in 2018.

If he succeeds, it would be a historic achievement. The last Italian champion in MotoGP was Valentino Rossi in 2009, while Ducati managed to conquer the title with Casey Stoner in 2007. To find a pairing of Italian champion motorcycle and rider in the premier class, we need to go back to 50 years ago, when Giacomo Agostini won the title on the MV Agusta.

Here are the winning combinations for Pecco.

Bagnaia is world champion in Sepang if:

- He wins the race and Quartararo doesn't get on the podium, regardless of Espargaro's position

- He is 2nd, Quartararo 7th or worse, Espargarò 3rd or worse

- He is 3rd, Quartararo 11th or worse, Espargarò 4th or worse

- He is 4th, Quartararo 14th or worse, Espargarò 5th or worse

- He is 5th, Quartararo out of the points and Espargarò 4th or worse
