Alex Marquez’s three year with Honda in the MotoGP weren’t easy. Two podiums gave him hope in the debut season, then nothing else. This is also why the Spanish rider decided to turn over a new leaf, accepting the offer to race next year with the Gresini team’s Ducati. It’ll be a way to test himself on a bike that he knows is competitive.
“I don’t take proving to others how much I’m worth as a challenge. I have to prove it to myself,” he explained in an interview with DAZN Spain. “I have to take the opportunity to say ‘okay, Alex. prove to yourself that you’re the same as when you won in the Moto2. It’s a winning bike, it’s ahead, it adapts to many riding styles. You have everything, and it’s up to you’. I'm putting pressure on myself. There are no excuses. At the end of the year, I’ll say that I’m either good enough or I’m not. We have to be honest.”
It’s hard with the RC123V and Alex.
“There are times when you get on the bike and you say to yourself, ‘I don’t know how to ride it’,” he continued. “But then I talk to Pol, to Taka, to Marc, and they also say the same thing. You can only do what the bike does. Mentally, it was very difficult.”
Now that Marc is back, the bar has been raised again. Will his talent be enough to win him the title?
“If the bike doesn’t follow you, it doesn’t go anywhere,” is what the younger of the two brothers thinks. “If you open the throttle and the bike doesn’t accelerate, you can’t do anything. We tried to ride the bike in every way, and we always get the same times.”
