MotoGP: Binder: “KTM and I desperately needed this podium”

Brad Binder had been nearing the podium during the past few races, but his qualifications had always penalized him. This, however, didn’t happen in Motegi. The rider from South Africa started from the front row, and he didn’t miss the opportunity this time. A second place (which he hadn’t seen since the inaugural race in Qatar) is the just reward for the work he's done.

I think it was one of my best races, and I’m happy to be back on the podium,”  he commented. “I have to thank the team. It was because of them that I made the right choice by mounting  the rear hard tire. I had never tried it this weekend, but my crew chief gave me the confidence I needed to use it.

And it went well.

It was a fantastic weekend,” Brad continued. “We’re working hard, and we have gotten lots of results this season. It’s  a good feeling to return to the podium. It was a tough race. I struggled in the beginning to figure out how much I could push. Following Martin and Miller helped me see where I could improve and use my strengths. It just kept getting better. We desperately needed this podium, and I hope it’ll be the first of many others.

KTM seems to be finding its way back.

I think the last three races were definitely better for us, and I hope we’ll maintain this pace for the future,”  he explained. “I had never ridden a MotoGP in Motegi. Friday was my first time, and I used the first ten laps in the race to better understand everything.

But the work’s not finished yet!

I think our bike works quite well. I had a small advantage in braking today, but we still lack speed in the tight corners and a bit of power.” Binder analyzed the situation. “We know this. We’re working on it. When we solve these problems, we’ll really make progress. In each race, we try something different to get the performance we want, but these last two races helped us, because the circuits fit the KTM well. I instead worked to decrease my tendency to lock the front.

After his overtake on Martin, Brad can also tick this box off on his “to-do” list.

Jorge did a fantastic job. He rode clean without making mistakes,” Brad said. “When I caught up with him up, five laps from the end, having mounted the rear soft tire, his tire slipped more, so he had lost those advantages he had gotten at the beginning. I pushed in braking and managed to overtale him.”

Binder ended up on the podium with Miller, who he’ll be teammates with next year.

I congratulate him. He was on another level today. When he passed me, he disappeared from my sight after three turns,” he said smiling. “He did an incredible job. I’m glad to have Jack in the garage next year.
