MotoGP: Marini reckons it’s the start of a new era for MotoGP: “the show is not lacking"

On the Sunday of the all-Italian 1-2 with Francesco Bagnaia and Enea Bastianini on Ducatis as the masters and the retirement of Andrea Dovizioso, Luca Marini equalled his best result of the season at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In his second consecutive fourth position, the Mooney VR46 Racing Team rider fully deserved to stay in the slipstream of the pacesetters for long stretches of the race, only to lose ground in the second part and finish at the foot of the podium by just one second.

“We have to be satisfied, my pace was really good. We worked well over the weekend and that made a difference. Today we were able to find something more on the bike that allowed me to feel even more at ease. The first three were uncatchable. I tried to stay as close as possible to Vinales, he made a lot of inaccuracies in corner entry. I hoped until the very end for a stroke of luck for the podium, but it wasn't to be, but I'm happy all the same. Now we have to take advantage of the next tests to try out new solutions and improve further in view of a track that is difficult for me like Aragon”.

How much were you actually missing to get on the podium?

“To beat Vinales maybe just one tenth, two instead to stay together with Bagnaia and Bastianini. I think riders like the three of them, and also Quartararo, didn’t change the bike excessively from Friday to today. For our part, we are looking for the solution to be competitive right away on race weekends. I think it's important to start with an ideal set-up and show your potential right from FP1”.

In the end you held your position over Quartararo ...

“We are clever; we know that we are also here to help. But lending a hand means getting to the front because if you fight for the victory or the podium it is normal to try to finish ahead of a rider of the calibre of Quartararo at the finish line”.

Many observers are speculating that your current team will move to Yamaha, are you worried?

"I don't think about it at all."

Can fans sleep peacefully for the future of MotoGP?

"It is the beginning of a new era. However, the process takes time. Rossi's credit is for having been able to capture the attention of fans and enthusiasts for a long series of years. In those days, the races were also broadcast free-to-air, anyone had the opportunity to easily reach this world. The level of the category is rising. Maybe today's race may have been boring for the show, but impressive for the pace. It wouldn't have happened in the past. Few spectators on the grass and in the stands? I don't think they are due to ticket prices, otherwise those directly concerned should point this out to the organizers. The show on the track is there, we simply need time because we are almost all young riders ".

In World Superbike, on the other hand, the races are always particularly exciting, also seasoned with many errors on the part of the riders. What would MotoGP need to align in this respect?

“We make no mistakes for the simple reason that we are the best riders in the world (laughs), and so are the bikes and tyres. So it is not possible to run into imperfections. I repeat that MotoGP remains a great show. Probably in the past they considered it more exciting as the usual 3-4 riders always fought for the victory, but today all or almost all of them can. And this can lead to a division in the sporting orientation of the fans. Seeing 6 or 7 riders chasing after the win at the same time is incredible”.
