MotoGP, Pecco Bagnaia: “Ducati favored at the Red Bull Ring? Not necessarily.”

MotoGP: Pecco Bagnaia: “Ducati favored at the Red Bull Ring? Not necessarily.”

Bagnaia doesn’t want to count his chickens (or “bull” in this case) before they’re hatched, considering the circuit on which they’ll be racing this weekend: the Red Bull Ring. Ducati’s stomping grounds. Another golden opportunity for Bagnaia to get closer to the top of the rankings.

We’ll see,” Pecco plays it safe. “From one year to the next, things can change. For example, last season, I struggled at Le Mans and, in this one, I fought for the victory. I know the next three circuits are good for me, but now it’s best we think about this weekend, and it’s hard to make predictions.

Do you feel you’re the favorite?
The potential of our bike is definitely good and, in theory, the new fairing should benefit me in the third and fourth sector. But, last year, the rearing up was a problem, and the new aerodynamics make it a bit worse.

You won here in the Moto2, and battled it out in the last lap with Oliveira.
I’d prefer doing it again when breaking away,” he said laughing. “For the entertainment, battles like the one between Dovizioso and Marquez are great. A victory like mine over Miguel is more satisfying, but when you break away, it’s all easier.

How do you imagine the levels on the track?
Last year, before it rained, I was battling it out with Marquez and Quartararo. Each bike was earning at different points of the track. In my opinion, in this GP, all the constructors could be ahead.

Still not thinking about the championship?
I’ll certainly try to recuperate points but, in the last two races, I have also been lucky because my rivals have had problems. It won't always be like this. I won't be able to earn so many points every time. Then, at this moment, Espargarò is the closest to Fabio in the standings.

Will the new chicane change anything?
It’s fine for me. In the end, there will be an acceleration and extra braking,” he laughsed. “The only problem is that the wall on the left now seems closer to me. It could be too close if it rains.”

Could the rain be an ally?
When it was wet, I was often fast. Even last year here, in the last laps of the race, after the flag-to-flag. But, in those conditions, Miller and Zarco are the fastest on the Ducati. We’ll  also have to be careful because the Formula one has already raced here this year and, with the rubber left on the asphalt, it becomes all complicated. In the Moto2, when testing, I fell because of that.

Could there be surprises if it’s dry?
Martin here is really fast, and I saw that Bezzecchi was psyched.
