MotoGP, Marquez: "the most difficult thing was deciding to operate again: was it me or was it the bike?

"I was racing and I had doubts: is it me, or is it the bike? I followed my instincts by listening to my body. Before Le Mans and then at Mugello it was difficult, but then there was optimism. Even now I have some doubts: everything is fine, but only when I ride a MotoGP will I understand if everything is OK or not "

MotoGP: Marquez:

The press conference was interrupted. It’s raining hard and there is a strong wind that shakes the external structure of the Hospitality.

"From a mental point of view, the most difficult thing was making the decision for the fourth operation. I was racing and I had doubts: is it me, or is it the bike? I followed my instincts by listening to my body. Before Le Mans and then at Mugello it was difficult, but then there was optimism. Even now I have some doubts: everything is fine, but only when I ride a MotoGP will I understand if everything is OK or not. "

Marquez: "the fact that Alex, my brother, will be in Ducati does not mean that we will exchange information"

"Alex is my brother, we live together, but we never mix the concept of riding style: Everyone works with each other because together we improve, like Valentino Rossi does in his Ranch. Everyone has his secrets and I will not talk to him about what Honda will certainly do. We are happy that Alex Rins is with Honda because he has so much experience."

Marquez: "I want a winning Honda, but the championship has changed: maybe the 2020 one would not work now"

"What do I want from Honda? A winning bike! The 2020 or 2021 bike might not work today because the championship is changing. I'm not an engineer but something has to change and I believe in my engineers"

"Come back when? Next week after the visit we will have the answer. They will tell me where the bone is at and at that point I will be back because it is important to prepare for 2023".

Marquez: "Honda has to change its way of working, but I won't be the one to tell them what to do. I'm a rider"

"I don't want to say that Honda has to work like the European manufacturers. In the past they have won a lot with their method, but it is true that the world and the championship are changing. It is important not to panic, which is the worst enemy . I am completely confident in their work, but it is true that to reach this target we must all work together ".

"But I won't be the one to tell them what to change: I'm a rider".

“We speak all the time and when I say team, it’s not people – it’s concept, the concept of the team. We are seeing that the European teams are working in a different way, we are seeing that Honda is working a lot – more than ever. They are working, the budget is there and you cannot say ‘no, you don’t do anything’. They are working. But when I saw changes in the team, it’s the concept, the coordination, trying to find the way. I’m not the guy to say ‘this is the way’, because Honda is the brand that has won more titles in the world and I’m here with Honda because I believe in them and I believe I can come back to the top with them. But, it’s true that they need to understand the way to organise well because every time we have more and more racing, less testing, the work in the factory becomes more important than at the circuit. But the circuit needs to work more together with the factory.”

"What does the bike need? Not riding it, it’s difficult to say. It's not a small problem, it's a big one. But it's not the bike it's all the project, communication and information have to flow in all areas. If the information travels and if people are motivated, they will resolve everything. The target is to understand where we should go with the 2023 project ".

Marquez: "When I understand I can ride a motorcycle, I'll do it. It's the most important part of recovery"

“It’s true that since the operation, the first six weeks I didn’t move my arm. First six weeks, the doctors – and I was completely agreed – went in a conservative way, in a way that they tried to take care of all the things and if we needed to take one more week then it’s better than being too optimistic. The first six weeks I was completely out, then the next two weeks I started to move my arm with a physio. Then from that point for the last four weeks, I started to work a bit with elastics. Now I start to increase a little bit the weight, but until next week when I have the doctor check that is when they will decide if I’m allowed to push more or not. And if they allow me to push more, that is when we will make a plan and we will understand immediately when I will come back. I don’t know when. One thing is the bone, the other thing is the muscles. I’m aware about how important this rehabilitation is, and if I need to wait one more week I will wait. It’s true that when I feel 70%, 80%, when I feel I can ride a MotoGP bike in a more or less good way I will come back because the last part of the rehabilitation, the best way is to be on the bike. You can’t wait to be 100% before riding a bike.”

"Honda is in a difficult moment. The project is not in its best moment, but I have the experience of the past and when I returned everything was changed. I am always in contact with Bradl. Of course my brother is there too, but I prefer to stay in touch with my team. Of course I'm here now, I'll talk to everyone, but it's not like riding. But I want to be involved because in difficult moments you have to work together. One man can't make a difference. "

"I am happy to be here. At Mugello I informed you of my decision, now it seems that things are improving. Now the doctors are taking care to let me recover slowly for sure. In the end it is an arm that has had four operations! Now it works well, I am able to do exercises that I could not do before and before the end of the month they will do a CT scan to see if I can increase the loads. At the moment we are optimistic. Every week I increase the work and the arm responds well ".

Marc Marquez's press conference is about to begin, the first in public after the fourth operation on the humerus of his right arm. Meanwhile, the weather is cloudy outside and the weather forecast does not promise anything good for tomorrow's free practice.

At 3.30 pm the start of the press conference on Sky Sport Channel 208

On June 3, Marc Marquez underwent a fourth operation on his right arm. The surgery was completed by the medical team of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, United States, and described as a success.

It lasted three hours and involved the 30° rotation of the humerus, which had welded badly. The operation was performed by Dr. Joaquin Sanchez Sotelo and his team. Since then Marc has certainly not disappeared and he has actually kept us updated on his condition by posting images of his recovery. At first with an arm brace, then while doing exercises with elastics, until the resumption of cardio activity on the treadmill and on a bicycle.

In this period Marquez has certainly not been silent: he expressed his doubts about the total recovery of the arm; then he confessed that without the fourth operation he would have been forced to retire and later said he wanted to return to racing at least in the last race of the season, at Valencia.

In short: he has not been silent and exhausted the information he could give us on his state of health, waiting for a further check to be done at the end of the month, he also began to have his say on the world championship that is carrying on without him, putting in a word in favour of his rival Fabio Quartararo, urging Yamaha to give him a hand.

Today, however, he will face the journalists at the Red Bull Ring, where he went for sponsor duties but also to stay close to his team, which are looking forward to his return, while Honda will probably formalize the signing of Joan Mir and the renewal of its agreement with Repsol at Misano.
