MotoGP: Bastianini promises to attack in the early laps, then do a smart race

by Mattia Caimi

Enea will start from behind, in 14th position, and on a track like the one in Barcelona where the grip is poor, the tyres wear out quickly and overtaking is difficult, so he expects a difficult race. Bastianini missed getting into Q2 today and was unable to compete for the positions that matter on the grid. While on the one hand the Beast is famous for going soft on the tyres, on the other the track conditions combined with an obligatory comeback will make it difficult even for the Rimini rider to be able to take home a good result. But he has a strategy.

“Too bad because we could have done better. On the last lap I wanted to do something more then I caught Mir who was grazing at turn 3. I should have got into Q2 this morning. At this point we have to work more tomorrow. I feel like I've gone back in time. The race pace is not bad and the 'drop' will be at the end, it will be a long race ".

You will need a sensational start…

“Yes, the start is now fundamental in MotoGP”.

What tyre will you use tomorrow?

"Choosing the right one is always difficult but tomorrow I think we can have a good race, I will have to recover a lot at the beginning, also because in the end it will be difficult to still have rubber."

Twenty-four laps here need a strategy, what's yours?

“Especially in the first part you need to be very gentle with the tyres, but I start from the back and I can't go too slow if I want to make up positions”.

Is there a sector in which you are stronger than the others?

"On new tyres I am fast in the first and last, with used tyres in the third. But I don't know which is the best. The important thing will be to be able to brake hard and do some overtaking ".

Do you think you can win? You will have to take a lot of risks.

"I will have to take risks at first but then I will have to stay calm, without exaggerating".

This track has many unknowns, is it difficult to make predictions?

"Yes, it's difficult, the track changes a lot depending on the time. The only thing I'm sure of is that I'll have to start strong ".

Can you confirm that it will be difficult for those in front to break away?

“I think it will be difficult for the front group to take any risks. If I were up front, I'd aim to keep my energy and tyres for the final laps "

Someone said it will be a bit of a jungle out there.

"Maybe at the beginning, but in the end the cards will be revealed".

On paper, you are the best at managing the tyres. Are you focusing on this aspect?

"Not so much. Tomorrow I will have to do an attacking race and the tyres will suffer, but above all I will have to do a smart race ”.

So you will take risks at first and then calm down? Is that a decision made since the last race or is it the circuit that requires it?

"It is due to the position in which I am starting".

Who do you reckon is favourite?

“Aleix and Zarco. But also Pecco, Vinales and Fabio. Quartararo today had an incredible pace ”.

Does it make more of a difference in the curves or straights?

“Curves, absolutely”.
