MotoGP: Marc Marquez: “My life would have no meaning without a bike”

The relationship between riders and the bikes they ride is a very personal matter, and it’s a topic that DAZN wanted to delve into with a documentary of four episodes: “Io pilota”, with the participation of important World Championship names, like Marc Marquez and Franco Morbidelli, but also Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi, fresh out of retirement.

Everyone expressed their own point of view regarding their relationship with their bikes, describing the sensations experienced after a fall or a victory. Marquez’s words were  particularly touching, during a delicate phase of his career during which injuries are preventing him from living his passion to the fullest, but also what, in the end, is his job: being a rider.

Motorcycles are part of my life,” Marc said.My life would have no meaning without the word ‘bike’ or without a bike, without a relationship with motorcycling. We riders usually already know what happens when you fall, the risk you face, the pain and injuries. You fall, and sometimes you want to get back on the bike right away but, other times, you don’t have this desire and you prefer to wait a few days. But you can never forget that you’re a pro. It’s your passion, but also your work, and sometimes you simply have to get back on the saddle.

There’s also room for the negative things that the bike can convey in this great documentary that, also offers unique emotions, as Marquez emphasizes.

The worst feeling you get on a bike is when things don’t work out. When you fall, sometimes you feel good, then you collapse. You can make a mistake, and so many things can happen, but when, for a variety of reasons, you’re fighting to get back in shape, your sensations are worse. Then there’s the flipside, and you feel it when you’re on the bike. Something that I almost never feel in life, except when I’m on the bike. That unique feeling of freedom, which makes you put the risk aside.

Words that are also shared by Maverick Vinales in the documentary.

For me, the bike means freedom. It’s when I feel free and feel in the present moment. It’s as if you’re not thinking of anything else at that moment. In life, you always think a little too much, you do one thing, and always think about something else. But once I’m on the bike, I only think about that, and that’s what I’m really passionate about.
