MotoGP: Bastianini: “Dall’Igna told me it’s impossible to have the Ducati GP22 in 2022”

He started 16th and finished 3rd. Enea Bastianini was a sight to see. Author of a masterpiece competition on the track where he won his first podium in the MotoGP just a month ago. But, this time, his race was a running leap, so much so that he recovered 13 positions.

Given everything, Avintia’s rider could have settled for what he achieved, but he instead saw it fit to deliver the decisive attack against the world champion, relegating him to 4th place. So on the podium alongside Pol Espargarò and Marc Marquez there’s also the rookie of the premier class celebrating, with the best Ducati at the finish line.

Yesterday I destroyed three bikes in eight laps,” Aeneas recalls. “It wasn't an easy weekend, since I was starting from a sixteenth position on the grid. At the beginning, I stayed in the traffic, but then I started to push, finding my pace and, above all, my confidence with the tires. Compared to a month ago, the temperatures were cooler and the medium tire proved to be the right choice, since it allowed me to be efficient, especially in mid-corner. In the end, I managed to get to the top positions, where Quartararo was. It was a good battle with him. I wanted to finish third, and I attacked him cleanly, taking the position.

The joy on Aeneas face is clearly visible.

“After yesterday’s qualifying, I thought it would be impossible to make the podium, In fact, I didn’t expect it. It’s strange for me to be in the first three places . When I saw Bagnaia on the ground and Fabio not too far away, I realized that I had to give it my all, and so I did. What can I say. My style is to get to the end,” he said jokingly.

This is the second podium for Bastianini, and now everyone is asking for a GP22 for him next season too.

“I’ll have the Ducati version 2021 next year, with the best possible material,” the rider from Romagna explained. “During the week, I spoke to Ducati and Dall’Igna, who confirmed that it will be impossible to have the GP22. So we’ll have to work hard to be competitive and try to get the best result.”

Speaking of competitiveness, Enea already knows where to start.

“I have to improve in qualifying, since, in the race, I have to recuperate like I did today. On Saturday, we must definitely do better. I’m referring to the FP4, as well as in qualifying. This improvement will have to start with Portugal, where we’ll adopt a different strategy. In addition to this, we’ll have to try to start more competitive starting Friday, since we suffer in the first practice sessions often, as well as in mixed conditions, where I suffer. And yesterdays falls are a confirmation of this.”
