Fabio Quartararo finished the first day of free practice in Misano in 16th place. In itself it is surprising to see the Frenchman in the rear end of the standings, but he was actually the best Yamaha rider out there. The reason is obvious: at the end of FP2 the asphalt started to dry and there are no worse conditions for the M1.
“Honestly I was happy with the Yamaha in full wet conditions - he explained - I felt good on the bike and when I entered the pits I was 7th. It was time to put on new tyres, medium at the front and soft at the rear, but when I got back on the track the asphalt was drying and despite this I was lapping a second slower”.
It seems to be the same old story…
"We don't know why, but in mixed conditions it feels like I’m riding another bike. It doesn't turn, it doesn't have grip, all the defects it could have are there - Quartararo was forced to admit - I don't know why, it's a problem with all the Yamahas. I look at the data of everyone else, not only Franco, but also Valentino and Dovizioso, and there is something wrong. I am a bit disappointed not to have been in the top 10, it was the goal for today, but we must think that today we have picked up useful information for the future ".
However, if the bad weather continues, Fabio could start thinking about running a defensive race.
"In the wet it is difficult to beat Ducati with our bike - he admitted - We can’t even dream of doing that, their power and acceleration make even more difference in the wet. I also talked about it with Dovizioso, he certainly knows the Ducati better than me, but certain things are clear even from the outside."
The only problem could be that Quartararo can lose his cool. Valentino said yesterday that a rider always prefers to finish the battle for the championship as soon as possible, otherwise things get more and more difficult.
“Every rider is different, the most important thing is to stay calm. If I don't manage to win the title here, I'll do it at Portimao” he concluded.
