Due to the untimely death of Dean Berta Viñales, the Superbike condensed two “long” races into just three hours. “I had to give it my all to keep Toprak behind. I tried in every way, but I exaggerated. I was really at the limit, but I’m satisfied, because I didn’t have a good feeling with the bike over the weekend,” he specified. “In practice, I’m almost always a fifth, sixth place but, in race one I felt at ease. In the following race, I had more confidence, a good pace, I believed in myself. Despite the bad start, I was able to catch up on riders who I thought were faster than me in some points. I tried to get the better of Toprak, but overtaking didn’t go well, since I didn’t know the real limit of the bike after what happened in recently. Sometimes it seems like a game of chess. Today I lost.”
The accident that occurred to the very young Spanish rider yesterday opened an important debate on the issue of safety. Motorcycling is a dangerous sport, however, the English rider dwells on the critical issues of a category such as the SuperSport 300.
“Despite the high safety level, we have more fatalities. The level is so high that you don’t have a moment’s rest. When you race, there’s tension every time, regardless of age, and risk lurks around the corner. Nobody would race if they thought they could die, myself included. We’re aware of the risk we face. Age has nothing to do with it. I just know that those bikes are especially heavy for thin guys. Watching this type of competition scares me, since they’re very close to each other. It scares me just to look at them. This was not the case long ago. The races were decided in the last corners. Now, there are over fifteen riders all close together, starting from the opening lap. The margin of error is infinitesimal. We competed because the family wanted us to continue in his honor. If they say not to race, we don’t, otherwise we continue,” has explained.
