Pecco Bagnaia is back at the Red Bull Ring. A week ago he arrived with high hopes, but they vanished on Sunday. So Quartararo extended his lead, Bagnaia’s dreams of winning the world title become weaker and the Italian knows that the Austrian GP could already be the last resort.
“You never know - he said - I will live this weekend like any other but knowing that I have a great chance to win or to finish ahead of Fabio. Now I am 58 points behind him and I can no longer afford to lose any more”.
How did this first day go?
"I'm happy, because I was able to improve my pace and my sensations on the bike, after 20 laps on the same tire I was still lapping in 1’24.3. Even in the wet I had incredible sensations and with tires I didn't like, because the pair of soft tires is not ideal on this track. "
Barana, Ducati's technical director, said that you riders have been helping a lot to push the limits of the bike.
"I think that every rider on the factory Desmosedici is able to make a difference, we are all 4 very competitive, in a different way from each other. The one closest to my style is Martin because he brakes hard and manages to make the bike turn, which Miller does by managing the lean angle, while Zarco is very gentle with the tires. We have several strengths and we are working very well to develop the bike for 2022”.
Has the generational change been good for Ducati?
“If Ducati is at this level today, it is because of the work done by Dovizioso and Petrucci in recent years. Especially by Andrea, who experienced the whole process since 2013, so we must say thanks to him, as well as to Iannone and Lorenzo. Now we have to sort out some details, but the important thing is that all of us riders have the same opinion on what needs to be done ”.
