MotoGP: Bagnaia: “Not happy with a last place, but satisfied with my work”

It doesn’t happen often to see Bagnaia’s name in the last place of the ranking, but that’s exactly what happened today. This could seem like a real disaster, but Pecco appears calm, as if he weren’t even a bit worried.

"Am I down in the dumps? I don't understand why you're asking me?" he replied. "Being last isn't great, but if you don't do a time attack, it's normal to be behind. In the MotoGP, there's a level that has never been seen before and, if you don't mount a new tire, you get left behind. We also saw it with Marquez, even though he switched from hard to medium in the middle of the session."

What kind of work did you do today?
“I used only worn tires. The problem, if anything, was not being able to set a good time at the beginning when they were new but, in that case, something didn’t work well, because I was only a tenth from that time in the end.  I can be very consistent, but I struggle to be fast in the first six or seven laps.

Do the tires also have a bearing?
I used the hard on the front today and the medium on the rear. I think it was good, but I saw that Miller was consistent and fast with the hard. I’ll definitely try it tomorrow morning, but first I’ll do the two time attacks that I didn’t do today.

How much do you have to improve?
“I’m last, so I still have a lot to learn,” he said laughing. "Compared to two years ago, my pace is much better, and so I’m not scared about the race. I’ve always struggled at the Sachsenring, even in 2017, when I got on the podium in the Moto2. I can’t be happy with a last place, but I’m satisfied with today’s work, because I managed to be consistent, and that was what I missed in Barcelona. I progressed, and I’m sure tomorrow will be the same, because I know where to improve.

They say that this track is the bête noire for Ducati. Do you confirm that?
There’s one thing I don’t understand. When we get to a track that’s good for us, everyone says we have to win at all costs. This is a Honda-friendly circuit, but nobody says anything. It’s strange. It’s always the rider who makes a difference but, I must say, the Ducati adapts well to this circuit. Honestly, I struggle to find what to change on the bike. I’m the one who has to work on myself. If I look at the data, I see that I’m shedding parts along the way. I can’t get good sectors together in one lap.
