SBK: Troy Bayliss in bad accident: C4 fracture and spinal cord injury

Troy Bayliss, three-time World Superbike champion, was the victim of a bicycle accident last Friday, May 14th, which resulted in a fracture of his C4 vertebra with spinal cord injury, which will force the 52-year-old Ducati legend to rest for a few months.
Troy, who has no recollection of the dynamics of the accident, appears to have collided with another bike that jumped out between two parked cars. The Australian champion hit his head violently on impact and lost consciousness. Bayliss was immediately assisted and taken to the hospital.

Despite the severity of his injuries, his condition is stable, and Troy was able to return to his home on the Gold Coast yesterday to begin his recovery.

"I'm OK and I'm home, but the crash means I won't be riding a motorcycle until I regain full movement in my arms and hands," Troy said. "I really just wanted to let everyone know what's happened, that I'm OK and that I'll be back in leathers as soon as I can. It's been an intense weekend for me and my family, but luckily I'm OK and I will recover. My doctors have been really positive, but there's no firm indication of how long it will be until I can regain enough control to get back on a bike – maybe a few months, maybe longer; it just depends on how the recovery goes once the bones heal up."
