Looking at the classification there should be very little to be happy about, but Franco Morbidelli managed to smile even after a nineteenth position. In fact, the Yamaha Petronas rider was unable to do better on the first day of the Portuguese GP, after not fitting the soft tyre in FP2.
“I am quite happy today - Franco said - Obviously I am not completely serene because I did not try a time attack but for this very reason it is almost fortunate not to be last. I wanted to concentrate on the medium tyres and race pace today, tomorrow morning I'll try the fast lap and we'll see if it goes well ”.
Does your race pace convince you? Basically, you rode with the medium tyre which is the hard one you did the race with last year, correct?
"Exactly, that’s the same compound as in 2020 and I think it could be the one we will use in the race again this year. Tomorrow I will also do some tests with the soft to see if it can be suitable for the race but in any case my pace with the medium was satisfactory, I improved my sensations slowly, especially in the afternoon ”.
Something seems to have changed from 2020, but not even Morbidelli has any clear ideas on this…
“I feel the differences compared to last year but I don't know what they are due to. Maybe it's the tyres, maybe it's me or the small changes made on the bike. At the moment I don't know how to give an answer but as I said earlier today I made a good step forward ”.
Today was the day Marquez returned to the track. The Spaniard already impressed in the first free practice, ending the day in sixth position. What do you think about it?
“I didn't see Marc on the track but I saw his times. What he did today and his performance after a year without MotoGP is really crazy. He showed what he's made of ”.
