MotoGP, Marini: “I tried to go fast every lap, the asphalt reached 60 °C

“I’m pretty happy with the day overall. My position isn’t good, and my best lap is slow, but I’m sure I’ll improve tomorrow. I try to do my best in any condition, even if some sessions aren't essential here in Qatar.”

MotoGP: Marini: “I tried to go fast every lap, the asphalt reached 60 °C

A 20th time for Luca Marini. #10 failed to carry out a time attack in Friday’s free practice, as he had planned. Despite not having a good time trial, Luca was satisfied with the work done on the bike. Valentino’s brother is not demoralized, knowing that he’ll be able to improve his time tomorrow, while also hoping to find the right opportunity for a good qualification.

Compared to last weekend, I feel much better on the bike,” is how Luca Marini described his day. “ We changed a lot of things on the bike, and all the various changes have led to something positive. In the FP2, during the last time attack, I tried to follow some riders, but no one was pushing. That’s why I wasn’t able to set a good time in the last three laps. I’m quite happy with the day overall. My position isn’t good, and my best lap is slow, but I’m sure I’ll improve tomorrow.

In the FP1 today, you were 11th. What has changed compared to last Friday?
"Honestly, I don't know. I was quite surprised. In the FP1, FP3 ,and in the Warm-Up, I think the others didn’t push very hard. There are very different conditions compared to qualifying and the race. In my opinion, they had nothing to try again on the bike, and they didn’t push. I tried to go fast in every lap to try to improve continuously.

The weather conditions are very different, and the asphalt is very hot. How does this affect you?
Pushing every lap helps me gain more confidence with the tires and helps me learn how they work. I have to try to do my best in any conditions. Here, in Qatar, things are different but, in the other circuits, the FP1 and FP3 are important. I always try to give my best every time  I’m on the bike. I don’t have enough time to relax so I have to learn quickly and get close to the best.

From a physical point of view, are you comfortable on the bike?
Yes, my  position on the bike is pretty good now, and I feel better. I think I’ll have to adapt, but I’m on the right track. Every lap I do on the bike, I feel better, but I’m still working on the details to be perfect.

Did you all expect to find a better situation, since it’s the second Grand Prix on the same track?
The front riders did very well. It was very hot today. This morning, the asphalt was close to 60°C. I think this affected everyone’s performance but, as we can see, the best guys were fast. In qualifying, the times will then be lower.
