Virtually the entire paddock bet their bottom dollar they would have seen Marc Marquez on the track in Qatar, including his opponents. After a day of testing in Barcelona and two more in Portimao on the RC213V-S, his return was reckoned to be a mere formality. Like everything else involving the Spanish champion since the Jerez accident, however, nothing can be taken for granted and in fact, a few days ago, Honda’s announcement was like a cold shower…

The reasons behind this decision were explained by Alberto Puig to DAZN Spain: "He will not be there because the doctors think he needs some more time to be 100% sure he can return in a good condition - explained the team manager of the HRC team - In Barcelona and Portimao his sensations were good, he was fast, but the doctors felt that the stress which his arm undergoes in a Grand Prix was still too much. We followed their instructions, but we hope he will come back soon and do what he knows how to do, which is to win races ”.

Puig believes we will soon see the same Marquez as before...

"You don't forget how to ride - he said - This does not mean that Marc cannot ride, but that the doctors want to make sure that the right amount of time has passed since the operation, they decided that the right thing to do was this and we'll wait. Starting without our champion is not the best thing, but neither is it the end of the world. If everything goes well, the championship will be long and there will be time to recover. "

At this point HRC are betting on Pol Espargarò…

"We have another rider who has the ability to fight for the World Championship, we signed Pol because we believe he has the experience and the skills - continued the manager - We are also convinced that he will help us develop the bike. Of course, when we signed we thought he was the right person for this year, we trust him 100% and we hope he can be fast on our bike."
