MotoGP, Vinales: "At Sepang I gave some indications to Yamaha, but they did something else"

“Unfortunately it's like being in a nightmare. No point for me to focus on Morbidelli’s bike, it's completely different from mine "

MotoGP: Vinales:

Usually we are used to seeing him start from the front row, but tomorrow he will start from the second, more precisely from the sixth grid slot. A bittersweet qualification in Valencia for Maverick Vinales, who lacked any opportunity to fight with the best.

Yet, despite being forced to settle for sixth, a certain confidence seems to emerge from the Spaniard. The sensations he encountered with the bike were positive, even if the usual problems continue to loom on the horizon.

“I'm quite happy after this qualifying, even if I'm not at the level I expected - began Maverick - during this weekend we have however tried to improve the bike. Unfortunately I wasn't able to do the fastest lap as I wanted, but I want to try and be confident for Sunday's race ”.

For Maverick, therefore, an attacking race is expected…

“To tell the truth, I don't have a particular strategy to follow. These last two GPs of the season will be useful to understand the way forward for next year. In fact, we will have to find the right direction, in order to work hard during the winter and be ready for 2021 ".

Maverick reckons he knows in what areas to take action…

"Unfortunately the bike, when there is no grip, suffers a lot at the rear. When there is grip, on the other hand, everything is fine and the M1 is competitive, but when this decreases we make too much effort. In addition to this aspect, there is also acceleration, where we suffer when coming out of the corners".

We wonder if it would be useful to go back to some aspects of the 2019 Yamaha, the one that Franco Morbidelli, who set the pole today, is using.

“Everything is different, the chassis, the engine, they are two completely different bikes and there is no point me focussing too much on Morbidelli's M1s. I have to stay focused on my bike to try to improve, as we are in a nightmare. Last year the Yamaha was competitive on all tracks, now only on some ”.

We begin to wonder therefore where the problems come from…

“For sure something went wrong. What I can say is that in the Sepang tests I gave Yamaha certain indications, which I thought were correct. Too bad these were not followed. Why? I don't know this, in the end Yamaha is a big manufacturer and they made other choices ”.

On this matter Maverick prefers to cut short…

“The important thing now is to try and chart a useful path for 2021 and be competitive. As I said, we have no rear grip when there is no grip, also the bike tends to slide and becomes very complicated to ride. However, we are working to find solutions ”.
