MotoGP, Fabio Quartararo: "With the Yamaha, either you win or you're lost"

"Even without the crash it would have been a difficult race. I still don't feel that the 2020 M1 is mine, but I'm fully focussed. We have a lot of work to do next year."

MotoGP: Fabio Quartararo:

There is no need to come face to face with Quartararo to guess what his morale is on the day when his last championship hopes ended with his fairing scraping along the asphalt. If 37 points from Mir don't exactly eliminate him from the battle, the difficulties suffered by all the Yamahas at Valencia are the requiem for a world championship title that could have been…

“It was a crash similar to the one at Silverstone last year - he said about his mistake - Aleix Espargarò slid in front of me and I hit the brake in reaction and went down. However, I didn't have good feelings after the warm-up, it would have been a difficult race. I restarted the race but the holeshot device was blocked, the rear remained down ".

Even without all these inconveniences, the impression is that Fabio would not have been able to have done much…

“Both Suzuki riders are really fast he continued – It’s been a really irregular season for me and for Yamaha, while they are always on top. They are always a step in front of us, it looks like both riders are really unbeatable.”

His balance cannot be positive…

“This situation makes me feel bad - Fabio admitted - I can't be happy with my season. With the Yamaha it’s either you win or nothing. When everything is perfect you can fight, otherwise you can't do anything. To be honest, I was surprised that I was still leading the championship after the two races in Austria, and even after the crash at Misano. Either we win or we are lost, in fact only at Jerez were there two Yamaha riders on the podium, the Suzuki riders are practically there every Sunday and they only have two bikes ”.

Looking back, there seem to have been so many lost opportunities...

"I lost the championship today - he underlined – but in the first race at Aragon I had the pace to fight for the victory, but I didn't score a point. I wanted less pressure in the front tyre, but the Yamaha protocol said no and I had the hardest race of my life. We will need to change many things next year, because it seems that the other factories are working in a much better way than us ”.

2021 will be the year in which he will join the official team and the responsibilities will be greater…

“The base will be the same but we need to understand how to improve, Suzuki does it all the time. Last Sunday Morbidelli won, today we all went badly. We are too inconsistent ”.

Quartararo also expressed doubts about the 2020 M1…

“It has changed a lot from the one I used last year and I still don't feel that it’s mine - he explained - Usually, if you start with good conditions from FP1, you can make small changes but if you don't have time you are lost. It is not just my fault and it is why I wanted to finish this race, to collect data for the next one. But it is difficult to accept my results ”.

However, he does not accept that some observers claim that he has thrown in the towel…

"I am so sad but in my head I’m fully focussed - he said - Even if the championship is over, I have second place to defend, that's how it went and I can't do anything about it. I’m just focusses on what I want – to try and finish as high in the championship as I can. I’m feeling good in the head, and we need to know where the problems are. I will give my best in the next few days ”.
