The case of the Yamaha engineer positive for Covid-19 forcing five others to self-isolate is just the latest misfortune that has happened to Yamaha in this unusual championship.
Even though the Iwata manufacturer is the one that has won the most MotoGP races this year - 3 with Quartararo, two in Jerez and one in Barcelona, 1 each for Vinales in Misano2 and Morbidelli, Misano1 - and currently has three riders in the top five in the standings after 8 races out of 14, with El Diablo at +8 over Mir, the situation does not look good.
Following three breakdowns that occurred to Morbidelli, Rossi and Vinales, in Japan they have realized that they had mounted a selection of valves belonging to a defective batch on the 2020 M1s. After an attempt to get authorization from the MSMA to replace them, which was not obtained due to the refusal to provide more technical information, the engine speed was temporarily reduced by 500 rpm. And now Fabio Quartararo is also using his fifth and last engine after FP3 at Montmelò.
At this point, if any Yamaha rider has to use an additional sixth engine, he will be forced to start from the pit lane or to serve a penalty in the race. The decision will be up to the teams.
