Just one week ago the Yamahas looked unbeatable at Misano but today, after a weekend of racing and a day of testing, it seems that their rivals have become more threatening. It is clear to both Valentino and Vinales who today both focused on improving in the race.
On paper it was easier for Rossi, who last Sunday almost stepped onto the podium. However, work remains to be done, despite the fact that he has already has his own personal ‘grooves’ on the Misano asphalt.
"I still have a lot of fun racing here, also because I'm 10 minutes from home and when you are a certain age, that makes all the difference - he joked - In the end the two things I like most are riding the bike and the competition; even though we have lapped a lot here this weekend we will find other balances, there will be different values on the track and all this gives me great pleasure. It will be a challenge, because to be able to do a race like last week we will need to go faster, it won't be easy but I'll try ”.
The innovations that arrived in the tests on Tuesday, such as the new exhaust and swingarm, will not help him in this undertaking...
"There were some interesting things to try, but we didn't find anything really better - admitted the Doctor - So we decided to continue with the standard bike and work on settings and balance. We found something good but, despite being half a second faster than last Friday, I still don't feel comfortable under braking and when entering corners ”.
Valentino's garage also had to deal with a happy event, which however created some problems…
“Munoz, my crew chief, became the father of a lovely child, he returned to Barcelona and we had to reorganize - he explained - Now it will be important to continue working, even tonight, because tomorrow we have to get into the top 10 in FP3. I knew this weekend would be more difficult and in fact the Suzuki, the KTM and the Ducati are stronger ”.
The only bike in real difficulty seems to be the Honda, also because it only has two riders on the track after Bradl abandoned.
“Honda remains the largest manufacturer by size - said Rossi - I think the bike is competitive, but without Marc Marquez it's complicated. They have a fast bike but difficult to ride and this makes all the difference, because in MotoGP you need a friendly machine to be able to push hard ”.
Even the Yamaha does not seem too friendly, at least for Vinales, who complained about the behaviour of the M1 with a full tank…
“The Yamaha at the start of the race is more difficult to ride, but not always. Sometimes it bothers me more to have a full tank and sometimes less, it's something related to the set-up used ”, observed the Doctor.
His last comment was about Morbidelli, who continued to suffer from some stomach problems today…
"You are all asking me about the party on Sunday since Franco missed the tests, but there wasn’t one. I was at home with my girlfriend and some friends watching the race, we had dinner planned for Monday night. But Franco was not well, he had problems in the bathroom, and it was cancelled,” he explained.
