"I have no offers for next year", confirmed Andrea Dovizioso in the official press conference on the eve of the Misano GP. It seems strange to us because, just four days ago, the Ducati rider confirmed the explicit interest that many paddock teams had expressed in him (INTERVIEW HERE).
Perhaps Dovi wanted to take one step backwards so as not to focus the attention (of the public and his) on 2021, remaining focused on a 2020 that for sure can be defined as positive – for want of a better expression in this period – but only if Andrea manages to win the world championship. And his words, after the denial of the declarations last Saturday, might just be a demonstration of this.
"The important thing now is to focus on 2020. I made my decision for very clear reasons and I know what I need to be competitive. I don't want to race just for the sake of racing. I imagine that something will happen next month, but for now there are no concrete proposals ”.
So, having exhausted (but only for the moment) the chapter about his future, we have to remember that this weekend there is a GP to race and that another one will be held on the same track next weekend. There are 3 points separating Dovi from Quartararo in the standings and there is no doubt that with such a compact championship a “double” counts a lot.
"This calendar is not a problem for me - said Dovi - Four days between one race and the next are enough to recover energy. Nobody has managed to be consistent in this first part of the championship and for the races here in Misano there are some unknown factors that come from the new asphalt and also, as usual this season, from the tyres. Last year I had difficulties from the third lap and in the tests I realized I had no speed. I expect to be more competitive but each race is different ”.
Pol Espargarò said that tomorrow many riders will be struggling in the fast corners due to what emerged in last week's tests. The KTM riders are even losing their feet from the foot-pegs due to the strong vibrations. Have you talked about this with Michele Pirro?
"I talked to a few riders and the critical corners are not the same as Pol said. Maybe it's a question of the bikes working differently. I exchanged opinions with Pedrosa and maybe his style or the bike he rides causes him difficulties in the fast corners because it has some jolts. But Pirro did not complain much about this problem. Last year in the Safety Commission someone complained about the tyres and some corners, we'll see tomorrow because if the bike moves too fast it will be difficult to manage everything ”.
Bagnaia: "A factory team is the ambition of every rider"
In short, it is not yet known where Dovizioso will be in 2021 but (almost) certainly he will not enter the Ducati garage. One rider who could replace him is Pecco Bagnaia who has returned to the paddock after the knee injury that kept him out for three GPs.
“For three weeks I was angry and nervous because I saw the others competing and I was at home - said Pecco, who was declared “fit” by the doctors today - I took some time to prepare and do physiotherapy. I'm not 100% but I'm doing pretty well, tomorrow morning it will be important to see my real condition in FP1. For my bike this is a good track and the asphalt should be better than last season, we'll see how it goes ".
As we mentioned before, Bagnaia’s future is Ducati Red, either that of his current team or the factory team, it does not matter to the Turin rider, even though ...
“I am very happy to stay in Ducati for the next two years, we'll see in which team - he explained - Pramac is certainly a top-level team and I have had the best since my bike is the same as the factory team and already this year I have the best bike you can have. I am happy but the ambition of any rider is to get into a factory team and if there is a chance I will certainly be happy. We'll see what Ducati's decision will be ”.
