MotoGP: Marquez says doctors made a mistake but still has trust in them

This will probably be remembered as the World Championship without Marc Marquez. The champion is in Cervera, waiting for his arm to heal to go back to doing what he does best, racing.

While there is no certainty about the timing for his recovery, there is however no shortage of controversy over his attempt to return to the bike at Jerez, just a few days after the operation. The doctors have been accused by many observers, but it was Marc himself who defended them in an interview with DAZN Spain.

"After the first operation we followed the recommendations of the doctors, who gave me the peace of mind to be able to get back on the bike, to be able to lead a normal life, but that’s not how it wentwere Marc’s wordsI continue to trust Dr. Mir and all his team, because everyone can make a mistake. I underwent a second surgery and now logically they are much more cautious. Time is needed for recovery. It is clear that the season is now lost, it is better to heal and come back as strong as possible when my body will allow it ”.

Marquez has no remorse about trying to force things at Jerez.

“I'll give you an example: you have an operation on your leg, the doctors say you can walk without crutches and you don't feel pain, what would you do? Would you walk on crutches even if it doesn't hurt? I took the same risks returning at Jerez as I would have taken returning at Brno or the Red Bull Ring. A bone takes between 6 and 8 weeks to heal. It is true that only 4 days had gone by at Jerez, but it would have been 2 weeks at Brno and three at the Red Bull Ring. The bone would have been fragile anyway ".

The Honda champion does not deny that there was a mistake, but this has had no effect on his relationship of trust with the doctors…

“The plate did not hold as the doctors expected - he continued - It was a mistake, but in hindsight it’s easy for everyone to judge. I was the first to trust Dr. Mir when I had a second operation with him. Because he had done thousands of interventions and they all went well ”.

Not Marc's…

“Something can always go wrong when you take a risk, like I did at Jerez - he said - But I didn’t do anything different to what I've been doing for years and which has given me so much happiness. This time it went badly ”.

The words of a woman he met in the streets of Cervera made him reflect…

"She said to me: ‘you do a risky sport, you have won 8 titles, you have never missed a race and you are not one of the riders who takes fewer risks. This has led you to win many titles, in every dangerous sport there is a year in which to recover, and this is it. You have to accept it and you have to give yourself time to heal.' It’s time to do it, to see if I will succeed before the end of the year, I would like to do at least one race to prepare for 2021 and return onto the attack. I'm saying I'll be back as soon as possible… but when I'm fine,” he said.

Meanwhile, Honda is lost without its champion…

“It has always been said that the Honda is made for me, but all the riders try the same parts and we all make the same comments - explained Marc - I'm the first rider who would like a much more versatile bike, one that adapts to different styles and a little easier to ride, but the Honda is the Honda. Perhaps now it is Nakagami who is pushing in this direction. I know he looks at my data a lot, he always has but now it’s working. But the other Honda riders are continuing to suffer, not just my brother ”.
