MotoGP, Agostini: "A champion wins with any bike. And, at a certain age, quits."

EXCLUSIVE - "Yamaha will have to draft an official contract for Quartararo or they'll sweep him away! In my opinion, Marquez will not change teams. Great champions, from Hailwood to Read to myself, changed bikes without a problem in fifteen days."

Paolo Scalera met Giacomo Agostini at the inauguration of the Yamaha Collection Hall at Schipoll in Amsterdam.

He spoke with him of the current world championship, analyzing it under all aspects. They also discussed the future of Italian riders, with so many promising ones that, according to Ago are emerging and will soon surprise us.

Several topics were touched, from Jorge Lorenzo's and Johann Zarco's problems, to the difficult decision of a champion, Valentino Rossi, when the time to retire approaches.

He was also referring to the (upcoming) decisions of the 9-time world champion who, at 40, will have to sooner or later decide on his future.

"The years pass for everyone," Ago said. "Young riders look past problems, Marquez never complains. He's either first or second. He's the right age, and he just forges ahead."

"I was used to winning. I won everything, " the 15-time world champion continued. "When I came second, I told myself that I was done with. When I started to struggle, I realized that it was time to stop. Not an easy decision. I cried for three days. I was leaving my real true love. It's not easy for any sportsman. Everyone has a hard time stopping. So I decided. Enough. I'm leaving my place to others. Then there was the risk. I lost lots of friends."

But what makes you decide? Lack of reflexes, fear?

"You don't realize it. They're little things, but you lose them. You still feel strong, at 30 or 40, but it's just that much. You reflect more. When I used to go to the Tourist Trophy, I'd race and win. Two weeks ago, I came back and said: I was crazy!".

Mino also spoke to us about Quartararo, of the likely "hunt" for Marquez and Lorenzo's difficulties.

"Yamaha will have to draft an official contract for Fabio or they'll sweep him away! I don't think Marquez will change teams. Great champions, from Hailwood to Read to myself, changed bikes without a problem in fifteen days!"
