“Grip is an unknown. We had grip at Silverstone but weren't fast. I need to improve on the flying lap to qualify on the front two rows”

A Friday for the books for Yamaha. Suffice to say that, come the end of day one at Misano, there are four M1s in the top five. One of these belongs to Franco Morbidelli, in fifth place.

The SIC Petronas rider is missing a little something over the flying lap, but he has good sensations in terms of his race pace.

A positive start for us, this morning I struggled, but in the end I was able to find the sensations I wanted with the medium tyre, finding the right direction. A pity about the flying lap, that's still my weak point, but I'm convinced I can improve on that".

Then there is the question of grip.

“The conditions change a lot from morning to afternoon and in the heat there is less grip, and the tyres wear more quickly”.

In the meantime, Franco enjoys this first day up front with the best.

“It's really great, a Friday to remember for Yamaha. I think grip will condition our weekend anyway, it's really strange and changes from bike to bike, the Ducati doesn't appear to suffer for example. Things seem alright for us here, while at Silverstone we were playing catch-up despite the good grip”.

The Italian nevertheless remains optimistic.

“For now the situation is positive but unclear. As we know, things can change fast in MotoGP as there's no mathematical equation for speed. I know what I need to do to improve anyway, also because we were competitive in testing”.

Lastly, Morbidelli sets his goal for Saturday.

“At a track like this it's important to qualify on the front two rows”.
