He was among the favorites for a pole. Instead, Fabio Quartararo had to settle for fourth place in the Silverstone qualifying sessions. A performance with a bitter aftertaste for the SIC Petronas rider, on the day that Magic Marc hit his 60th start off ahead of everyone in the premier class.
"Unfortunately, a light lit up on the dashboard at the end of the first lap," explained the French rider. "It was a strange thing, so I had to go back to the pit-box. In the end, I think it was still a positive day, and I'm convinced of our pace for Sunday."
He then thinks about his competition.
"Marc is certainly fast, but the same goes for Vale and especially Vinales, who demonstrated it in the FP4. I'm convinced that many riders will be battling it out for a victory tomorrow."
However, the focus returns to the problem he had to deal with.
“Like I said, a light lit up on the dashboard. I said to myself, 'I'll finish the lap to have a time, then I'll go to the pit-box.' I mounted a double soft, but I wasn't really confident about the front, also because I hadn't tested this solution much during the free practice sessions. The important thing is that, at the last exit, I still replicated the time of the previous lap."
Fabio is slightly upset.
"Even if you're pushing on the gas and you're working hard, when a light turns on that signals an alarm, your confidence suddenly disappears. I then tried to control the situation, and I can't deny that I was worried at that moment. I personally think that the first row was within our reach. My pace? I'm confident. We worked well on it, but the same goes for the other Yamahas, as well."
The first lap was fundamental.
“Although we're struggling in terms of top speed, the first lap will be important, given that the straight is shorter than in Austria. So I'll try to start off good, like at the Red Bull Ring, and be ahead."
