Moto2, MotoGP can wait, Alex Marquez staying with Marc VDS in 2020

The Spanish rider, current leader of the championship, will race again next year in Moto2: "I'll be able to continue to prepare for the premier class."

Alex Marquez will remain in Moto2 again next year and won't even change teams. The official announcement arrived today and confirms the agreement between the Spanish rider and the Marc VDS team. The current Moto2 championship leader had tried to explore a possible transition to MotoGP, but he prefers to wait.

"I'm very happy to announce that I will continue with the Estrella Galicia Team 0,0 Marc VDS in Moto2 next season ," said Alex Marquez. "I'm very grateful for the trust the team puts in me. With its renewed technical structure, which is a fundamental part of its current success, I'll be able to continue another year to improve as a rider, increase my riding level, and prepare myself to fulfill my dream of making the leap into the MotoGP. I'm also grateful for the confidence Estrella Galicia 0.0 has had in me all these years and also Marc Van der Straten who will continue to support me in my sporting career, so that I can achieve my goals in the Moto2 category."

The team owner, Marc Van der Straten, added: "I'm really happy that this kid, rider, man, will stay with us for another year. His being promoted to the MotoGP next year would have thrilled us because we want the best for him and why? He deserves it. However, I wouldn't have liked it if he had stayed another year in Moto2 competing in another team. If he were to win this year's title, it would have been of poor taste for him to fight to defend it in 2020 for an opposing team. Fortunately, he'll be staying at home and will be able to complete his entire Moto2 career with the team that saw him grow."

Joan Olivé, the Team Manager, commented, "We're very happy to be able to count on Alex for another year. This season was very positive, and we're having a great time with him. We have created and consolidated a very high quality, compassionate and professional group with which we are working very well, therefore, being able to give him continuity, and fighting to continue to collect successes together is great news. On the other hand, this renewal is very important because this will allow both Alex and the team to concentrate on the championship with peace of mind. To know that we will continue together next year. I want to thank Alex for having continued to trust us, as well as all the sponsors, which are always by our side and have believed in this project."
