MotoGP, Dovizioso: “The spoon? I wasn't worried about losing points"

“The sprint races? What counts is bringing home the best result and not the gap. Termas will be particular, but the Ducati is different to 2018"

MotoGP: Dovizioso: “The spoon? I wasn't worried about losing points"

The Qatar win, the Ducati spoon. These have been the hot topics in the weeks leading up to the Argentina GP. As the South American round prepares to kick off, there is interest in hearing from the Losail winner, or rather Andrea Dovizioso.

it was nothing strange for me – begins the Italian – I wasn't worried about the points, also because in the worst case scenario, we wouldn't have been able to use the spoon in the future. If that had happened, I wouldn't have been overly worried. I only used the spoon during warm--up and didn't get much data. What counts is that the win stands and was achieved at the end of a great race weekend”.

Some defined the last GP as a sort of sprint race.

“I have to say that it was a strange race and quite slow, but the strategy paid off. But now we're focused on this weekend, I expect to be more competitive at Termas compared to last year. Argentina is a strange race though, as you have to see what track conditions will be like”.

What might the South American round tell us?

“I think it's still too soon to understand what kind of championship we're in for, for now it looks like there are many competitive riders and so anything can happen. I expect a strong Honda and Suzuki and a fast Yamaha”.

Back to the subject of a sprint race, do you think we need to get used to that?

“No, but it can happen. There are reasons why races turn out that way, as you need to bring home the maximum result and not the maximum gap to the others. I've heard some stupid remarks about the last race, like if the gap from the leader is reduced then the rider has improved”.

Andrea, back to Termas. What can we expect?

Argentina is a unique race where the weather makes the difference. If you are immediately fast, then it's all easy but if you struggle then you carry the problems with you all weekend. Our bike is different to 2018, but so are those of our rivals. I'm talking about Suzuki and Rins for example, but also Honda, which can count on another kind of bike compared to last year, especially the frame”.

Some predict 36° this weekend.

I don't think that will be the case”.

Finally, how did you celebrate your birthday?

“I ate at home with friends and the day before I went MX riding with Danilo at a great track. The cake? I had one, in the shape of RedBull”.
