The Superpole Race or, in other words, giving it everything you've got over just ten laps. The sprint race is one of the most highly-anticipated new features of the new Superbike season and Alvaro Bautista didn't hold back. The Aruba rider crossed the line in first place once again this morning, beating Johnny Rea to the line, albeit it be only one second with respect to what we saw in Saturday's race 1.
No-one gave a thought to conserving the tyres over such a short distance, the aim being solely to attack and go all out for the win. After a thrilling head to head between the Spaniard and the Kawasaki rider, the duel lasting almost eight laps, the Aruba rider found a little extra and pulled away from his rival to cross the line first.
The third spot on the rostrum went to Leon Haslam, who more than made up for his race 1 crash. The KRT rider preceded the Yamaha quartet comprising Lowes, van der Mark, Melandri and Cortese, while Michael Rinaldi closed eighth. The team Barni rider is proving confident in what is his first appearance at Phillip Island, the Italian again beating Chaz Davies, tenth across the line behind Laverty.
It was a disappointing Superpole Race for Tom Sykes, eleventh, followed by his BMW team-mate Reiterberger and the Honda of Leon Camier. Torres, Mercado and Razgatlioglu were all caught up in a crash together in the final stages.
