Moto2, MV Agusta: When the tail has a hole

We’re accustomed by now to the most daring aerodynamic experiments in MotoGP. But this is still uncharted territory in Moto2. One reason being the relevant regulation which expressly prohibits fairings or appendages that have become the norm in the premier class. This, however, doesn’t mean that a bit of imagination can’t find a creative outlet in a class where the difference is often made by details, since the engines are the same for everyone.

MV Agusta has decided to invest in this and, in fact, took advantage of the winter hiatus to subject its bike to wind tunnel tests. The first result was an unprecedented tail fairing with a large hole. Its function is not to achieve a greater aerodynamic load, as occurs in MotoGP, but to improve air flow and, therefore, reach a higher maximum speed.

The F2 has opened a new door, and Mauro Noccioli (Dominique Aegerter’s chief mechanic and responsible for bike development for Forward Racing) told us that they have other ideas up their sleeve.

So all we have to do now is wait for the next tests to find out what the CRC engineers have in mind.
