MotoGP, Lorenzo: "I'll ride... to not lose the habit"

Jorge will try to race at Sepang: "I can only understand my condition once on the bike, it's important not to take too many risks"

MotoGP: Lorenzo: "I'll ride... to not lose the habit"

Jorge Lorenzo will try to race at Sepang, but only the track can tell him whether this is possible. He is well aware that he will only have answers by riding his Ducati. “For now I haven't even been able to sit on the Ducati in the garage, because the bikes were being built. I don't know how I'll feel, I'll find out tomorrow”.

The Majorcan's condition is definitely better than it was in Japan, prior to having surgery on the ligaments in his left wrist.

i feel better, the operation went well, but I only had surgery 8 days ago. Yesterday the cast came of my wrist, so my mobility can't be good. Sepang is also a track with some tough braking, so in this sense Phillip Island would have been easier”.

Michele Pirro is waiting in the wings should Jorge not be able to ride.

I'll try anyway. It's important for me to get back on the bike as soon as possible, because the longer you're out, the more you lose certain reflexes, also because I haven't really been able to train in recent weeks”.

And soon it'll be time for his first test on the Honda.

I'll think about that after Valencia - he replies - I'm focusing on the present right now, and for now I'm a Ducati rider”.

It's unlikely Lorenzo will be fighting at the front come Sunday though.

I don't think I can aim for a good result, but racing would be useful ahead of the final Valencia round. I want to rebuild confidence with the Desmosedici without pushing too hard, and particularly without committing any errors. You never know how things will go in a race, rain might help me for example”.

Jorge then touches on Bautista's fourth-place result at Phillip Island.

Alvaro had no experience of the Desmosedici 2018, but coming from the GP17 is not like swapping to a Honda or a Yamaha, it's not a drastic change.  He did very well, especially because he had two crashes too and that always affects your confidence. He made a few mistakes in the race but nothing important, and he proved that the Ducati is also competitive at Phillip Island”.

Who would Jorge select as Dovizioso's team-mate for 2019: Petrucci or Bautista?

“If you'd asked me last year after Assen, when he was fighting for the win, I'd have said Danilo. Now I'd say Alvaro, also because I know him better and he's Spanish like me. But I don't like it when people only look at the latest result to judge in rider, you need to look at his whole career, and Danilo has had some great races. Next year, Alvaro won't be in MotoGP but he will be in SBK, with a factory team, a great opportunity that I know he won't waste”.
