Good in the morning and even better in the afternoon, the Thai weekend for Danilo Petrucci started on the right foot. The Italian Pramac rider did the 5th best time in FP2 just 0”148 behind fellow Ducati rider Dovizioso, the fastest on the track.
“It was a rather positive day where we were consistently in the leading positions - he began - But I know that choosing the right tyres for the race will not be easy. The temperatures are very high and that means a lot of wear.”
Danilo still does not have a clear idea on which tyre to select.
“The good news is that I was fast with all the options, but I had a technical problem with the bike I was using to test the hard on the rear and I wasn’t able to bring it back to the garage - he explained - I can’t be sure about grip, but I am fairly confident that it is the right tyre for the race.”
The plan for tomorrow is the keep focusing on this point.
“Making the right choice will be the key for Sunday - he emphasised - I’ll also need to qualify on the front two rows to be able to make a play for it and not have to make up ground in the early laps as happened to me in recent races. The feeling on the bike is good.”
His teammate, Jack Miller, also performed well in FP1 (4th best time) but then in the afternoon he was the first to drop out of the Top Ten, although only be a few tenths. The Australian, however, has already figured out what went wrong.
“In general, things did not go badly, but I expected more from the soft tyre at the end of the session - he said - I put it on the front too, because in the last GP it had worked well, but it wasn’t the same on this track. It moved around a lot. The steering closed up and I had to save it at least 4 or 5 times with my elbow on the ground.”
There is still FP3 and, above all, the qualifiers to seek redemption.
“We learned - he assured - Tomorrow I’ll put on the medium and I’m sure that I can improve my performance. Today I did my best time risking a crash.”
